SEATTLE – Kayla Chan won the floor exercise and Shelbi Spivey tied for first on the uneven bars, helping Seattle Pacific add two full points to its previous season-high total in a team triumph at the SPU Triangular women's gymnastics meet at Brougham Pavilion.

Senior Darian Burns was consistent, placing among the top-six in every event to claim the all-around crown for SPU. Her four-event total of 38.875 was her best this season and handily outpointed runner-up Kenadi Brown of Anchorage who posted a 38.175-point tally.

The NCAA Division II Falcons compiled 193.575 team points, their highest total since the 2018 season, to defeat a pair of Division I opponents. They improved dramatically from last week's score of 191.575 that was the best this season. SPU surpassed season-high marks as a team on all four events.

"It's pretty exciting to see them really put it together," first-year SPU coach Sarah Jean Marshall exclaimed. "We've been counting falls so far this season and we not only did not count a fall, but we went 23 for 24 on our lineup routines."

Sacramento State's second-place score of 192.250 was sparked by Destiny Watley, who topped the vault field with a mark of 9.775.

Alaska Anchorage placed third at 191.900. The Seawolves' Sophia Hyderally won the balance beam with a 9.875, the top mark of the meet on any apparatus. She shared top honors on the bars with Spivey, each scoring 9.800.

SHELBI SPIVEY INTERVIEW

Spivey improved upon the career-best 9.750 she recorded last week. The junior did not compete last season due to an injury.

"Shelbi has been training amazing on bars. She is an incredible bars swinger," said Marshall. "What's even more impressive is that she's just coming back from having torn labrum surgery last season.

"Some people never come back to bars after that surgery, it's a pretty big one, and she's come back better than ever. She really hit that routine and was an exclamation point to this meet."

Chan was alone atop the floor field, receiving a score of 9.775 that improved her previous career best of 9.750. She led an SPU sweep of the top-three places on the floor as Jadacie Durst and Alixandra Pierce tied for second at 9.725.

"That was another amazing routine," Marshall said of Chan on the floor. "Her amplitude is above all others. It's really amazing how she jumps out of her tumbling passes. She just flies. Kayla put all three passes together and it was awesome to see her be successful there."

KAYLA CHAN FLOOR EXERCISE ROUTINE

Senior Lena Wirth continued to be steadily spectacular for SPU on the vault with a second-place score of 9.750. She has reached the 9.700 figure in all four meets this season on the vault.

Burns had two fourth-place finishes with matching marks of 9.700 on the vault and floor. She also notched a 9.700 on the bars and a 9.775 on the balance beam.

The Falcons compiled one of the finest team beam scores in their history, approaching the school-record of 48.950 on that apparatus. They counted two 9.800s, two 9.775s and one 9.675 en route to a total of 48.825 points.

Pierce, a freshman, and senior Miyuki Matsune tied for fourth place on the beam with scores of 9.800.

• SPU improved its team-high vault total by 0.275 with a combined 47.875 points.
• Two Falcons posted season-high vault marks, Darian Burns with a 9.700 and Delaney Fields with a 9.425. Fields does have a 9.500 to her credit, but it was an exhibition vault last week.
Lena Wirth kept alive her streak of earning a 9.700 or higher in every meet this season with a 9.750.

BEAM
• Lofty beam total of 48.825 for the team was within shouting distance of the school's all-time record of 48.950 on that apparatus.

• Establishing new career-best scores were Haven Lanzador and Alixandra Pierce. Season highs came from Darian Burns, Miyuki Matsune and Lena Wirth.

FLOOR
• The fourth event season-high to fall was the floor as SPU compiled 48.550 team points to eclipse its previous best by 0.325.
• The Falcons finished with a flourish as four gymnasts set new season-high marks and one tied her best. Kayla Chan, Jadacie Durst, Miyuki Matsune and Kylie Reese improved their best scores of the season on the floor and Alixandra Pierce matched hers.
Darian Burns would have won the event title except a one-tenth deduction dropped her score to 9.700.

UP NEXT
The Seattle Pacific gymnasts embark on a three-meet road trip that begins Feb. 8 at Air Force. They visit St. Charles, Mo. for meets on Feb. 14 and 16 before returning home to host San Jose State on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion.

"Now the team knows that this is what they are capable of ,and even more than this," Marshall said. "It really boosts the scores when we are not counting falls and are able to clean up the landings. We had so many stuck landings tonight.

"This confidence should help propel us forward to be able to continue in this direction the rest of the season."
