ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Senior Darian Burns finished first in the all-around competition Friday for the third straight meet, helping Seattle Pacific to a second-place women's gymnastics team result at the GymQuarters Invitational in Family Arena.

Darian Burns vs Air Force, Jan. 17, 2020
Darian  Burns
Burns compiled a four-event total of 38.875 points and was the runner-up in two events.

Her season high-equaling score of 9.875 placed second on the floor exercise as did her 9.800 on the balance beam. She tied with teammate Kayli Tran and Centenary's Dorothy Mims for the silver on the beam. Burns turned in a third-place score of 9.650 on the vault and received a 9.550 on the uneven bars.

The NCAA Division II Falcons overcame a slow start to post their third-highest total of the season with 192.675 points and handily defeat third-place Centenary College of Louisiana (189.525). Division I Southeast Missouri won the meet with 193.525 points, bolstered by three event wins.

SPU opened on the vault and moved to the bars for the second rotation. Neither apparatus produced a season-high mark for a gymnast and the team totals were among the lowest this year. The Falcons overcame that sluggish start to equal their season-best beam total of 48.825 in the third rotation and close with a strong 48.700-point showing on the floor.

"These girls felt a little pressure going into the meet and we got some lower scores than we've been getting and made a few small mistakes," first-year SPU coach Sarah Jean Marshall said.

"They were able to really rally together and commit to making the rest of the meet a good one. They pulled it together and had an outstanding beam performance for the third week in a row. We had really remarkable floor results as well to end on a really strong note."

SEMO's Anna Kaziska placed first on both the beam (9.875) and floor (9.900), the latter with the highest mark of the meet. Redhawks teammate Lindsey Bates topped the bars field (9.700).

Centenary featured Cami Bea Austin whose 9.800 score won the vault and she was fourth in the all-around with 37.675 points.

Dahlia Solorzano-Caruso was second in the all-around with a score of 38.500 and Centenary's Kendall Sanders was third at 37.825.

Burns' three-meet winning streak started in a Jan. 31 home triangular meet with the same 38.875 score she accumulated Friday. She then was victorious on Feb. 8 at Air Force with a 39.375-point figure that was the second-highest all-around total in SPU history.

"Darian is just really getting more confidence this season and it's awesome to see her put four events together and take that all-around title again," Marshall exclaimed.

Kayli Tran vs Air Force, Jan. 17, 2020
Kayli  Tran
Several other Falcons finished among the top-six in events in Missouri.

Junior Shelbi Spivey's 9.650 gave her second place on the bars and freshman teammate Corrin Coons was sixth with a 9.575.

Two SPU gymnasts rode career-best scores to lofty placings on the floor. Freshman Alixandra Pierce was third with a 9.825 and sophomore Kayla Chan tied for fourth at 9.800.

Along with the second-place scores of 9.800 from both Burns and Tran, Miyuki Matsune's fifth-place effort of 9.775 and a sixth-place 9.750 from Haven Lanzador put four Falcons among the top-six beam performers.

"The beam lineup was incredible," said Marshall, who singled out Tran for praise. "Kayli hit that 9.8 again. She just has the most gorgeous beam and when she's on, it's just beautiful. She has incredible form and flexibility and really shines on that event."
