SEATTLE – Darian Burns will never pass this way again.

But even if she did, it would be tough to top the way she performed on Friday night.

In the final home meet of her stellar gymnastics career, Burns won three of the four events, tied for the second-highest floor exercise score in school history and the seventh-best uneven bars score as Seattle Pacific tangled with San Jose State in Brougham Pavilion.

DARIAN BURNS INTERVIEW

The Spartans won the meet with 194.900 points, while SPU tallied 191.925.

But the night belonged to senior star Burns.

She started by winning the vault with a 9.825, tying for her second-best mark of the season. Then, Burns nailed her bars routine better than she ever has, pulling a a career-high 9.875. That tied her with five other former Falcons who have earned that score, and topped her previous best of 9.850.

But she saved her best for her last-ever home routine, and it came on the floor. Burns was her usual high-energy self, and was crisp and clean from start to finish. The 9.925 that came up on the score flashers tied her with Corrie McDaniel (2002) and Ariana Harger (2016) on SPU's all-time list, trailing only the school-record 9.950 that Callie Field posted in 2000.

"Absolutely that was the highlight of the evening and a nice finalé for Darian here in Brougham," exclaimed first-year Falcons coach Sarah Jean Marshall.

"That was just a huge, clean routine. She hit all of her tumbling passes and showed it off to the crowd. Everyone really enjoyed it and Darian definitely was rewarded for that."

The previous best for Burns on the floor was 9.900.

DARIAN BURNS FLOOR EXERCISE ROUTINE

Burns finished third among the all-arounders with 38.875 points.

The Spartans' Taylor Chan (39.000) and Tia Gin (38.975) finished one-two in the all-around competition. Teammate Emma Milne topped the balance beam field with a mark of 9.925.

SPU junior Shelbi Spivey placed in two events, tying for fourth with a 9.750 on the bars and executing a sixth-place vault of 9.700.

Each of the Falcons four senior competitors garnered a top-six finish in the home send-off, including Burns' trio of first-place results.

Lena Wirth was the vault runner-up with a score of 9.750, Sienna Brane was fourth on the bars at 9.750 and Miyuki Matsune turned in a sixth-place beam tally of 9.675.

"I hope the seniors all feel really great about the night," Marshall said. "There's always a lot of pressure going into Senior Night. They all had the opportunity to really showcase what they're capable of and just to enjoy this time together as a class and as a team."

SPU junior Jadacie Durst was sixth on the floor with a mark of 9.700.

For the first time all season, the vaulters generated the most points of any event. They combined for a score of 48.600 that was a massive, by gymnastics standards, improvement of 48.300 over SPU's previous season-high on that apparatus.

The five counting scores were all 9.650 and above and seniors Burns (9.825) and Wirth (9.750) finished one-two. Spivey's sixth-place score of 9.700 was her career best.

"Vault was amazing. We made a big leap on vault and a huge part of that was increasing start values," Marshall explained.

"We got Lena (Wirth) back in there which was really perfect timing for Senior Night. Then Shelbi Spivey really stepped it up and competed her twisting vault for the first time this season. That was really exciting to see that."
