ANCHORAGE – Kayla Chan turned in two career-high scores late Saturday, tying for first place on the floor exercise and placing second on the vault for Seattle Pacific, which avenged the previous night's setback with an NCAA women's gymnastics dual-meet road victory over Alaska Anchorage.

Chan received a score of 9.850 to share floor honors with the Seawolves' Isabelle Fox. Her previous best in that event was a 9.800 established on Feb. 14.

"Kayla had a big night," exclaimed first-year Falcons coach Sarah Jean Marshall. "She stuck her vault and it was beautiful. She went over to floor and definitely did her best routine. That was one of the most exciting routines of the night, for sure."

SPU's Darian Burns topped the vault field with a 9.775 and Chan was the runner-up at 9.750. Chan surpassed her career-high vault total of 9.700.

KAYLA  CHAN FLOOR EXERCISE ROUTINE

The Falcons matched their best score of the season with 193.750 points, a figure they initially reached on Feb. 8 at Air Force. Anchorage posted a second-place score of 192.600 led by the winning all-around total of 39.100 by Fox, who had the meet's top score on any apparatus with a 9.900 on the balance beam.

UAA's Sophia Hyderally was the leading uneven bars performer with a 9.850.

The same teams squared off on Friday at the Alaska Airlines Center with the Seawolves notching a 192.550 to 191.800 victory. Saturday was a rubber match and gave bragging rights to SPU, which was also a victor in this season's first meeting on Jan. 31 in Seattle.

"Wow, it was a really awesome night and amazing to see these girls come back and really show what they're capable of," Marshall said. "They came into the meet with a lot of positive energy. They were more relaxed and familiar with the atmosphere. They just came in looking a lot more confident on day two."

Jadacie Durst vs Air Force, Jan. 17, 2020
Jadacie  Durst
It was a perfect night for the Falcons in terms of completing clean routines, going 24-for-24 with no falls. Every score was 9.475 or higher and the lowest score they had to count was a 9.525.

SPU placed five gymnasts among the top-seven vaulters led by the one-two finishes of Burns and Chan. Lena Wirth placed fourth (9.700), Alixandra Pierce fifth (9.575) and Shelbi Spivey seventh (9.525).

Burns and Jadacie Durst shared third-place honors on the floor with similar scores of 9.750.

The Falcons completed the meet on the beam where Miyuki Matsune tied her season-best of 9.800 to place third while teammates Haven Lanzador and Pierce posted matching fourth-place scores of 9.725.

Next Meet
The SPU gymnasts take a break from competition next week before returning to action on Saturday, March 14. They make the short crosstown trip to the University of Washington for a 2 p.m. dual meet versus the Huskies in Alaska Airlines Arena.

"It's really strange because we get into a rhythm of competing every weekend so this will feel a little different," Marshall said. "This is a great opportunity for us to back off this next week and then hit it hard the week after that to prepare for UW.

"It gives us the chance to focus on some little details and rest some sore bodies that have been working really hard this season. Then we'll be ready to go for UW and for the postseason."
