11 Falcons are National Gym Scholars

USA Gymnastics honors a host of stellar SPU students

INDIANAPOLIS -- Eleven Seattle Pacific student-athletes were named 2020 Women's Collegiate National Scholars by USA Gymnastics.
 
The list of Falcons honored include the entire, four-woman senior class. Sienna Brane, Darian Burns, Miyuki Matsune and Lena Wirth each were third-time selections to the national academic team.
 
Also recognized were SPU juniors Jadacie Durst, Haven Lanzador, Kylie Reese and McKenna Zimmermann. A trio of Falcons' sophomores were listed, Kayla Chan, Delaney Fields and Kayli Tran.
 
To earn USAG Scholar-Athlete honors gymnasts must be in their second, third or fourth years of eligibility and possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 in the previous two semesters or three quarters on a 4.00 scale.

Sienna  Brane
A product of Glacier Peak High School in Snohomish, Washington, Brane has a 3.71 grade point average in physiology. She excelled on the uneven bars and balance beam. She had a 9.750 bars score to her credit this season and she was the Falcons top beam performer in the Feb. 16 meet at Lindenwood.

Darian  Burns
Burns, from Druid Hills High School in Atlanta, Georgia, registered a 3.64 cumulative GPA at SPU while majoring in urban studies. She is a two-time national champion, collecting USAGym gold medals on the floor exercise in 2017 and the all-around in 2019. Burns was the Falcons' top scorer in all four events and the all-around in 2020. She tied the school vault record of 9.900 on Feb. 8, the same date she tallied SPU's second-best all-around total of 39.375.

Kayla  Chan
Chan hails from West Ranch High School in Santa Clarita, California. The exercise science major has a 3.46 GPA. Chan posted lofty career-high marks of 9.850 on the floor and 9.750 on the vault in 2020. She twice topped all SPU floor competitors in a meet this season.

Jadacie  Durst
Durst, from the Academy of Arts, Careers & Technology in Sparks, Nevada, compiled a 3.64 GPA while majoring in integrated studies. She competed on the vault, bars and floor at the 2019 national meet and produced an outstanding score of 9.825 on the floor this season.

Delaney  Fields
Fields is a first-year Falcons competitor from East High School in Denver, Colorado. The sophomore has a 3.41 GPA in exercise science. She was a regular in Seattle Pacific's vault lineup with a best mark of 9.575.


 
Haven Lanzador headshot, 2020
Haven  Lanzador
Lanzador graduated from Westerville North High School in Ohio. Her 3.68 GPA came in an integrated studies curriculum. Lanzador was SPU's top beam scorer on Feb. 28 with a 9.775 at Alaska Anchorage.


 
Miyuki Matsune 2020, headshot
Miyuki  Matsune
Matsune is a two-time national beam qualifier and 2018 All-American. She reached her season-high beam score of 9.800 on two occasions in 2020. The West Covina (Calif.) High School product is a mathematics major with a 3.41 GPA.

Kylie  Reese
A graduate of Sheldon High School in Eugene, Oregon, Reese participated at the 2019 USAGym Championships on the floor and notched a season-high score of 9.700 on that event in 2020. She owns a lofty 3.71 GPA in a politics, philosophy and economics curriculum.

Kayli  Tran
A product of Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) High School, Tran boasts the highest GPA among Falcons with a 3.96 in visual communication. She excelled in the gym as well, twice leading the Falcons on the beam with a 9.800 both times.
 
 
Lena Wirth 2020, headshot
Lena  Wirth
A vault and beam specialist, Wirth boasts lofty marks in both events. She was the Falcons top vault scorer in each of this season's first four meets, topping out at 9.800. The Roseville (Calif.) High School graduate compiled a 3.83 GPA at SPU while studying biochemistry.

 
McKenna Zimermann 2020, headshot

Zimmermann
Zimmermann hails from Presentation High School in San Jose, Calif. She battled through an injury this season and was limited to exhibition performances only, one season after placing 11th nationally in the all-around with a score of 38.650. She is a nursing major with a 3.66 GPA.
 
The 2020 season ended prematurely for the SPU gymnasts along with all teams nationwide after the NCAA announced the cancellation of all winter and spring championships due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
