Five-Goal Flurry Fuels Falcons

Chloe Gellhaus nets both first-half goals, SPU posts third clean sheet

SEATTLE – Chloe Gellhaus scored first-half goals less than five minutes apart Saturday and teammate Jacqueline Blakeley contributed a goal and assist in Seattle Pacific's 5-0 women's soccer victory over Pacific Lutheran at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (3-0) remained unbeaten and un-scored upon, having defeated opponents by a combined 13-0 margin.

Several SPU regulars began the game on the bench as Coach Arby Busey gave some reserves a chance to start. The Falcons applied steady pressure, but were unable to find the back of the net during the opening 38 minutes.

Gellhaus changed that exactly 39 minutes into the contest. She entered the game at the 29-minute mark and got on the board 10 minutes later. Blakeley served a low cross from the right side near the endline and Gellhaus finished with a first-timer from close range.

At 43:48, Gellhaus struck again from outside the box at the center of the field. She received a low, parallel pass from the right flank and made a quick move to find a shooting channel. Her low, 25-yard drive got a light touch by the goalkeeper on its way into the right side of the goal.

CHLOE GELLHAUS 2ND GOAL

"It can be that way sometimes where it was really challenging for us to find solutions to what they were presenting," SPU coach Arby Busey said of the early scoring drought. "It's like the first one took so much work and now you have the solution and the second one comes quick.

"Thankfully, Chloe came in and made an immediate impact. She is a special player and did a couple special things to get us going."

The halftime shot count was 13-2 in favor of the Falcons, who finished with a 25-3 advantage in that category. The hosts compiled 12 shots on goal and PLU did not put an attempt on frame.

Kaitlyn Knocke made her debut between the posts for SPU. The sophomore goalkeeper was not required to make a save, but played all 90 minutes to get credit for the shutout.

The Lutes (6-4-2) had their five-game undefeated streak snapped. They played Western Washington to a double-overtime draw in their last outing after winning the previous four games. A number of players were missing from the Pacific Lutheran lineup Saturday.

"First and foremost I want give a ton of credit to PLU for coming out and playing the game a bit shorthanded," Busey said. "They were game opponents for us today and we appreciate them making the sacrifices they did to get here and allow us to get another game in."

Seattle Pacific registered its third goal just over four minutes after intermission, at 49:19. Toni Miranda finished a corner kick from Callie Rheaume for her first goal of the season and the second of her career.

Outside back Ally Veenhuizen picked up a point for the second straight game, after an assist in last week's shutout win gave her GNAC Defender of the Week honors. On Saturday, Veenhuizen served a cross into the box that freshman Sophie Beadle one-touched into the right side of the Lutes goal at 60:53. That was Beadle's inaugural collegiate goal.

Blakeley capped the scoring at 79:29 with her first goal in an SPU uniform. She was at the far post to receive and head in Ava Giovanola's right-side corner kick.

"Jackie has been really consistent in practice so it was great to see her get on the board today. She has great size, playing as a target player for us who is easy to find," Busey described. "On the goal today, you could see her size come into play. She is the biggest, tallest kid in the box. She decided she wanted it, and there's not much anybody else can do but hope that she misses."
