Beadle-Mania! Falcons Freshman is Fab

SPU women continue streak of scoring at least four goals every game

SEATTLE – Meet Sophie Beadle!

The Falcons fab freshman tops the team charts with eight assists this season. Beadle's playmaking ability has helped the Seattle Pacific women's soccer team Come Together for an undefeated season so far.

After Saturday's performance, she had SPU fans wanting to Twist and Shout.

Beadle compiled two goals and an assist and teammate Chloe Gellhaus also scored twice, lifting seventh-ranked Seattle Pacific to a 5-2 victory over Central Washington at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (7-0-1) extended a streak of scoring at least four goals in every outing. This was their third five-goal barrage.

"Another good performance for our team," said SPU coach Arby Busey. "Central Washington did some things in the first half that put us a little bit out of rhythm and made things challenging for us, which is great. The girls on our roster responded really well in the second half, cleaned some things up and got a well-deserved result today"

Beadle started the scoring just over five minutes into the contest. Claire Neder broke free down the left sideline and angled into the box before sliding a low pass across the goalmouth. Beadle broke in the area and first-timed a left-footed volley from the top of the 6-yard box at 5:03.

SOPHIE BEADLE 1ST GOAL

She netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 49th minute on a five-yard rebound and putback after Sophia Chilczuk's shot was deflected by the goalkeeper. With her speed wreaking havoc, it's been Helter Skelter on the right wing as Beadle appears to be Here, There and Everywhere.

"She has been doing that stuff for us most of the season," Busey exclaimed. "Sophie Beadle is going to score a lot of goals here and create a lot of things. She had been somebody who had a ton of assists and had a hand in a lot of things. Today, provider turned goal scorer and was fantastic."

After Central evened the score at 1-1 in the 18th minute, Beadle set up Gellhaus for the go-ahead goal 10 minutes before halftime. She Saw Her Standing There, open in the center of the field and fed a sideways pass that Gellhaus collected before curving a shot into the goal from distance.

It seemed like just Yesterday she was playing at Rainier (Wash.) High School, but now Beadle is making it a Hard Day's Night for collegiate opponents. She has three goals on the year for a total of 14 points.

CHLOE GELLHAUS 1ST GOAL

Gellhaus struck again in the 78th minute, following a headed goal at the left post by defender Mariah Alexander off a Neder corner kick in the 61st. She went on a dribbling run into the right side of the box before delivering an 11-yard blast into the left-inside netting at 77:41.

"Chloe is special and has those qualities to turn to when games are not completely in your control. She's got the ability to just get on the ball and go get herself a goal," Busey described. "She possesses really special individual qualities in terms of her ability to elude defenders and then finish things with a powerful, accurate shot. Chloe had that magic today in both the goals that she scored."

Surprisingly, one player who didn't score for the Falcons was Chilczuk who entered Saturday with nine goals, including on in all six previous games in which she had participated. While Central prevented her from breaching their goal, Chilczuk wasn't kept off the scoresheet, picking up an assist on Beadle's second goal.

Mackinzie Packwood tallied both goals for the Wildcats (2-1-0), who suffered their first setback. She leveled the score, 1-1, at 17:03, lofting a 23-yard shot into the upper-right corner from outside the top-left corner of the box. Packwood completed the scoring with 2:20 remaining.

She had two great chances to complete the hat trick, but came up empty. With 1:49 left to play Packwood's hard, 17-yard shot sailed just wide of the right post. When 1:12 showed on the scoreboard clock she lined a shot toward the top right corner, but SPU goalkeeper Riley Travis managed to get one hand up on a dive to bat the ball away.

Travis played all 90 minutes and stopped four shots for the Falcons.

Emily Thompson made six first-half saves for CWU, which was outshot by an 11-3 margin during the opening 45 minutes. She was replaced at halftime by Megan Fox, who was credited with four saves.

The final shot count was 23-9 in favor of the Falcons, who also had the more dangerous opportunities with a 15-6 advantage in shots sent directly on goal.

CHLOE GELLHAUS INTERVIEW

The lone blemish on the Falcons otherwise perfect ledger this season is a 4-4 draw at Western Washington on April 24. They have another crack at the Vikings with a rematch in their next game.

The SPU women remain home to host Western Washington at Interbay Stadium on May 12 at 7:30 p.m.

"It will be fun. Those are games that, as it was the first time, bring out the best in both teams. Both teams grew and were better for having played each other in that first game in a very good, competitive, intense atmosphere," Busey said. "This year with everything that everybody's gone through and the amount of time we've had to wait to be able to play, those kinds of games are invaluable for our players moving forward.

"When our conference isn't sponsoring a tournament and the NCAA (Division II) isn't sponsoring a tournament, it's great to get games like that to get your heart rate way up and your blood really flowing. Those are great times for our players to be tested and we're excited about that challenge that we know we're going to face in a week and a half when we get on the field with them again."

Prior to Saturday's game SPU honored a trio of players as part of the Senior Day Ceremony. Falcons Kaylie Nelson, Sierra Smith and Kate Veenhuizen are completing school and won't be returning to the team in the fall.
