SEATTLE – A two-goal lead for 11th-ranked Seattle Pacific was erased by a pair of short-handed scores late Saturday night with the finally tally coming 39 seconds into overtime for Colorado School of Mines, which escaped Interbay Stadium with a 3-2 men's soccer non-conference win.
Tristan Semelsberger came off the bench to assist on the first goal, by John Burnett in the 79th minute, and score the second for the Orediggers (4-2-0). His equalizer occurred with 5-minutes, 29-seconds left in regulation, exactly three minutes after teammate Patrick Allan was sent off for a foul on a breakaway in the 82nd minute. The visitors played with 10 men for the remaining 10 minutes.
The Mines golden goal was initiated by a throw-in from the left side by Lucas King. Greyson Adams flicked the ball from the near post to the right of the box with his head. George Marchant received the ball with his back to the goal, spun and tucked a 12-foot shot into the left-inside netting at 90:39 to end the contest.
"It hurts. Anytime you give up a lead, it's a difficult one to take. But we had some opportunities to try and close that game out," said SPU interim head coach
Kevin Sakuda. "We spoke before the game that we were going to need to deal with set pieces, corner kicks and long throws. We end up getting punched on those twice tonight."
The Falcons (3-1-0) suffered their first setback, halting a three-game winning streak that included Thursday's 2-0 shutout of No. 22 Regis.
ALEX MEJIA FREE KICK GOAL
The hosts built a 2-0 lead on goals by senior forwards
Alex Mejia and
Alden Massey.
A product of Seattle's Roosevelt High School, Mejia has now scored 14 goals as a collegian and four of them came this season. Massey notched his 11th career goal with his first score this season.
Mejia increased his team-leading goal total with a fantastic free kick in the 35th minute. After being four four yards outside the box, he set the ball and swerved it into the upper-left corner, past the out-stretched arms of goalkeeper Brian Doherty.
"He struck it really well," Sakuda said of Mejia's free kick. "A great, quality finish. He stepped up, was confident and whipped it in there."
The Mines starter stopped two shots before giving way at halftime to backup Kenneth Symmes, who also made two saves.
Massey managed to put a 72nd-minute strike past Symmes. SPU's
Travis Swallow went on a dribbling run outside the top of the box before passing to Massey who quickly trapped the ball from a standstill, eyed an opening and steered a shot from just outside the box to barely inside the left post.
"Alden cut inside and clipped it with a great finish," Sakuda described. "It's good to get him going. We missed him in California and as we head into the mix here, he's been great."
SPU goalkeeper
Lars Helleren was credited with six saves, but had his two-game run of clean sheets halted.
