LACEY, Wash. – Poor air quality forced the Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team south to Lacey to host Montana State University Billing which featured a second-half surge from the Falcons that resulted in a 3-0 win over the Yellowjackets on Saturday afternoon.
"I'm proud of the guys," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "It was a difficult day with the change of venue, and they didn't let that affect how they approached the game. It was truly a team effort today. Great performance against a good opponent."
After a slow first half, the Falcons poured it on offensively in the final 45 minutes. Owen Gortner worked the ball to Alden Massey, who crossed the ball right in front of the goal. Cameron Yriondo got a head on it, sending it into the middle of the goal to put the Falcons up 1-0 in the 60th minute.
In the 67th minute, Connor Tollan added to the Falcon lead. He was able to knock a ball past the keeper for his first goal of the season. The Falcons led 2-0 after the ball found the net.
The Falcons scored their final goal in the 69th minute. Tollan was involved once again, sending a ball to Ed Weise who headed it into the net. For Weise, it was the second goal of the season and capped off a solid win for the Falcons.
Lars Helleren spent all 90 minutes in goal for the Falcons. He faced seven shots, as the defense was able to suppress the Yellowjackets to just two shots on goal. MSUB also had one corner for the match, all leading to two saves in Helleren's seventh shutout of the year.
The Falcons controlled the pace of the unique contest. They owned an 11-7 shot advantage, with four shots coming on goal. SPU has been dangerous on set pieces all season long, as they created six more on Saturday.
SPU is back at Interbay on Saturday at 7 p.m. as they host Simon Fraser.
