ELLENSBURG, Wash. – It proved to be a competitive and somewhat chaotic match on Thursday between the Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team and Central Washington, as Moira MacKay scored her first collegiate goal at the perfect time when the game-winner lifted the Falcons over the Wildcats 3-2.
"We fought hard for a result today," head coach Arby Busey said. "It was a great battle between two extremely motivated teams. It was back and forth all game, and we feel fortunate to have come out on top."
The Falcons and Wildcats played an even match early in the first half. A 26th-minute goal from Emily Darcy gave the Wildcats the lead.
The Falcons were looking for a chance to level the score, and it came in the 35th minute. Emmy Moore stood over a free kick, sending it into the box. The ball bounced in front of Callie Rheaume and AJ DePinto as neither redirected it. Instead, the ball skipped into the left side of the net for the goal. Both teams took a 1-1 tie into halftime.
The Wildcats scored quickly to open the second half. Once again, it was Darcy who found the back of the net. Her goal in the 46th minute gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
In the 58th minute, CWU's Kassandra Jaggard committed a costly foul. It set up Marissa Bankey for a free kick. Bankey didn't miss, tying the score at 2-2.
Throughout the match, SPU created four corner kicks. Their biggest came in the 73rd minute. MacKay received the corner and deposited it into the back of the net. Her first career goal was clutch, which proved to be the game-winner.
Both teams were incredibly aggressive offensively throughout Thursday's match. The Falcons led the onslaught of offense with 19 shots, while the Wildcats sent in 16. SPU gained the advantage in shots on goal with 10 to CWU's six.
"I loved our team spirit today, we rallied around each other and dug deep," Busey added. "We look to recover and prepare for a big challenge on Saturday. We will have the chance to honor some amazing seniors."
This Saturday is senior day. The Falcons are back at Interbay Stadium for a match against Northwest Nazarene on Saturday at 4 p.m.
