Great Pumpkins! SPU Carves Out 9-0 Win

SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team was scary good against Saint Martin's as the Falcons spooked the Saints out of Seattle 9-0 on Monday afternoon.

Interbay Stadium proved to be a haunted house for the Saints on Monday. Seven Falcons contributed to nine goals and a shutout win. It was the most goals scored by SPU since an 8-1 victory over the University of Mary on Oct. 16, 2010.

"It was a great day," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "It is a testament to our depth. We've told the guys all along that we think our strength is our depth. A lot of guys got a lot of minutes today. A lot of guys put together great performances and we're happy to keep a clean sheet."

The Falcons opened the scoring in the 5th minute of the match. Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week Owen Gortner stood over a penalty kick. He zipped it in past the keeper to put the Falcons up 1-0.

Alden Massey continued his recent run of strong play with a goal in Monday's match. Aidan Thrall created the opportunity with a perfect pass in front of the goal that Massey put away. The Falcons led 2-0 in the 8th minute.

Andrew Tran was a monster in Monday's match. He got in on the scoring in the 33rd minute. Connor Tollan and Judah Johnston connected passes that led to a goal for Tran.

The final moments of the first half belonged to Joey Van Horn. In the 39th minute, Van Horn was working toward the goal before sending a shot in that found the back of the net. A minute later, Van Horn scored a goal that was assisted by Tran. The Falcons entered halftime with a 5-0 lead.

The Saints couldn't escape the eerie atmosphere in the second half. The scoring continued in the 54th minute. Brady Fendrich was credited with an assist after his shot banged off the crossbar. Cade Cooke turned it into a header goal, giving the Falcons a 6-0 lead.

Moments later, Aidan Drought played a nice ball over to Orlando Erazo. Erazo settled it and fired a shot just outside the 18-yard box. Unbelievably, the Falcons were up 7-0.

Drought was involved in another goal in the 60th minute. This time, he was the one who scored for SPU. Tran set up him with a pass that created space for Drought to finish.

The final goal for the Falcons came in the 64th minute. Tran turned and hammered a shot toward the goal. It zoomed past the keeper, giving SPU an incredible 9-0 lead.

Three keepers teamed up for the shutout. Lars Helleren started and played the first half. Cam Welty came in and played 31:38 minutes in the second half. The final 13:22 belonged to Matt Samson. Helleren led the way with three saves, while Welty stopped one shot.

SPU plays their final weekend of regular season matches this week. It starts at Western Oregon on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
