Falcons Settle for Draw with Saints

LACEY, Wash – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team took the quick trip to Lacey for a match against Saint Martin's on Thursday. The Falcons controlled the match, outshooting the Saints 18-7, but one didn't fall as the two teams settled for a 0-0 draw.

The match belonged to the Falcons, who featured a relentless offensive attack on Thursday. They sent eight shots in during the first half and followed it with 10 more in the second half. Six of those shots were on goal, as SMU made saves on all six. The Falcons created 11 corner kicks during the match while limiting the Saints to just two. Ultimately, the frustrating day ended in a tie.

The Falcon defense did well in limiting the Saints throughout the match. Lars Helleren was outstanding, playing 90 minutes and making three saves. He recorded his fifth shut out of the season during Thursday's match.

"We did a lot of good things today," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "I felt like we controlled the game, defended well, won the ball back quickly in transition, and created a bunch of chances. It's great to get the shutout but we needed to be better in front of goal today to earn three points. Credit to Saint Martin's- they made it difficult for us in the final third."

Alden Massey wasted no time trying to give the Falcons the lead against the Saints. He ripped shots in the 5th and 9th minute of the match that missed high and right respectively. Massey was busy during the match, leading the team with four shots during his 80 minutes of action.

Late in the first half, Luis Zazueta sent a low one at the goal. It was scooped up in the bottom left corner by the Saints keeper Nick Mueller. He made one more save in the 41st minute of the match when Aidan Chaparro tried to score. The Falcons and Saints went into halftime tied at 0.

The second half started with a good chance for Evan Aune. He tried to deposit one in the top right corner, but it was saved by SMU. Connor Tollan took shots in the 58th and 61st minutes, but couldn't make them go. In the 83rd minute, Chaparro tried to give the Falcons the win, but it didn't come.

The Falcons are off for the rest of the week before returning to Interbay Stadium on Oct. 13 as they host Northwest Nazarene at 4:30 p.m.
