11/2/2022 9:15:00 AM

SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team hits the road for the final time this weekend. The trip starts at Western Oregon on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. followed by the regular season finale at Northwest Nazarene on Saturday at 3 p.m. PST.

GNAC WEEKLY AWARDS
The Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer weekly awards were swept by Seattle Pacific University this week as Owen Gortner earned the offensive honors while Ed Weise was deemed the best defender in the conference after the team's 2-1 victory over Western Washington last Saturday.

Last Saturday was senior day, and they led the way against the Vikings. Gortner scored two crucial goals against WWU, as both were assisted by his classmates. Alden Massey set up the first goal in the 56th minute. It was Ed Weise creating an opportunity for Gortner in the 77th minute.

Weise's assist and defense from the Falcons led to his honor from the conference. SPU kept WWU from taking a shot in the first half of the match. The Vikings took just six shots for the match.

SCARY GOOD AGAINST THE SAINTS
The Falcons played a match against Saint Martin's last Monday. The game was scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 20, but poor air quality forced a postponement. The Falcons unleashed on the Saints, taking a 9-0 victory. It was the most goals scored by SPU since an 8-1 victory over the University of Mary on Oct. 16, 2010.

The spooky box score shows seven Falcons contributing to nine goals throughout the match. Andrew Tran was a monster, leading the squad with two goals and two assists in just 33 minutes of play. Joey Van Horn also scored twice in 33 minutes of play.

SCOUTING THE WESTERN OREGON WOLVES (2-12-2, 1-9-1 GNAC)
Western Oregon men's soccer is wrapping up its first season this weekend. The Wolves picked up their first GNAC win on Oct. 23 against Saint Martin's. It was a 2-0 victory powered by goals from Alex Grignon and Abraham Villalobos.

The Falcons dismissed the Wolves on Sept. 22 in Seattle. It was a smooth 2-0 win for SPU. Alex Brown and Donovahn Allen were the goal-scorers for the team. Lars Helleren picked up his third clean sheet of the season on that day.

Like starting anything, it's been tough for the Wolves. They've allowed 2.13 goals per game while scoring just .69 goals per game. Grignon leads the group with four goals, one assist, and nine points. Juan Suarez has played nearly 1,371 minutes in goal, making 98 saves.

SCOUTING THE NORTHWEST NAZARENE NIGHTHAWKS (11-3-2, 7-2-1 GNAC)
The Nighthawks have everything to play for entering this weekend. They hold a one-point advantage over Western Washington and Simon Fraser in the GNAC standings. The Nighthawks and the Vikings play each other in Nampa, Idaho on Thursday, in one of the most critical matches in the conference this season.

The Falcons and Nighthawks played to a gritty 0-0 draw in Seattle on Oct. 13. Massey and Tran sent seven of the 13 shots for SPU, but none found the back of the net. The defense was stout, as Helleren had to make just one save in the shutout.

The Nighthawks score 1.75 goals per match while holding opponents to 1.19 goals per match throughout the season. Jake Levine leads the group with six goals, three assists, and 15 total points. Jimmy Koufidakis and Sullivan Smith follow close behind with five goals each.
