SPU Men Come Up Empty at Mines

Orediggers score twice during the second half for a 2-0 nonconference victory

GOLDEN, Colo. – Looking to turn things around after an 0-2-2 start, the Seattle Pacific Falcons yielded two second-half goals on Saturday night and dropped a 2-0 non-conference men's soccer decision to Colorado Mines on Saturday night.

The Orediggers came in looking to get back to the .500 mark (they did, now at 2-2-2) and defend their home turf.

In the 65th minute, SPU defender Jackson Goode fouled Tristan Semelsberger in the penalty area, picking up a yellow card and giving the Orediggers midfielder a penalty kick. He converted, booting it past goalkeeper Lars Helleren for a 1-0 lead.

In the 83rd minute, Mines midfielder Lucas King put up a perfectly placed corner kick that fellow midfielder Michael Sprauer headed into the goal just to the left of Helleren for a 2-0 advantage.

Both teams had their opportunities during the scoreless first half, with SPU getting off six shots and Colorado MInes seven. The only shot on goal for the Falcons during the opening 45 minutes came from forward Alden Massy, but CSM Goalkeeper Brian Doherty was able to pick up the save.

SPU (0-3-2) maintained possession for most of the first half; but that changed after halftime. The Orediggers came out energetic and created multiple opportunities. In the 52nd minute, CSM's Semelsberger fought through a sea of bodies and got a shot on goal, but Helleren came through with a diving stop to keep the game scoreless.

The game had taken a rough turn during the second half, with the teams coming for six yellow cards through the first 25 minutes – that after no yellows were issued during the first half.
