SEATTLE – It was only a matter of time before the Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team's offensive erupted like it did on Saturday afternoon against Concordia Irvine. Five different Falcons found the back of the net as the team cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Golden Eagles.
"I'm proud of our guys," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "It's been kind of a frustrating start to our season. We've been talking about continuing to do the things that are important to who we are. They've stuck with it and continue to believe. Today was great because they were rewarded for that."
The Falcons got the scoring party started in the 18th minute of Saturday's match. Orlando Erazo stood over a corner kick opportunity and sent it into the box. Donovahn Allen flew from the back and dove forward, using his head to put the ball in the back of the net to put the Falcons up 1-0.
The Golden Eagles answered in the 43rd minute. It didn't take long for the Falcons to answer. In the 44th minute, Tyler Speer lined up a corner for SPU. Demian Alvarez copied Allen with a header, tucking the ball away to put the Falcons up 2-1 before halftime.
The scoring continued in the second half. The 65th minute featured another corner kick for the Falcons. Aidan Chaparro sent it into the box where Evan Aune headed the ball off the turf and into the net. Suddenly, the Falcons were up 3-1.
Andrew Tran scored his third goal of the season in the 77th minute. He launched a shot from about 20 yards out, getting it into the left of the keeper. Speer picked up his second assist of the match on the goal.
The Falcons scored their final goal of the match in the 90th minute. Alexander Hristov ripped a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. The screamer entered the goal in the upper left corner. Aidan Drought assisted on Hristov's first career goal.
SPU held CUI to just one goal during the match. Lars Helleren spent 81 minutes between the posts, making three solid saves for the team. Cam Welty took over for the final nine minutes. He made one save during that time.
The Falcons return to Interbay Stadium on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. when they host Western Oregon.
