Falcons Settle for Draw with Wildcats

SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team received a worthy challenge from Central Washington University on Thursday night, as a steady onslaught of offense from the Falcons never broke through, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Falcons were relentless throughout Thursday's match. They outshot the Wildcats 16-6. SPU added eight corners to their offensive attack. The Falcons' offensive volume wasn't enough to break through for the lead or the game.

"We weren't our best tonight," head coach Arby Busey said. "We faced a very motivated opponent. It's disappointing to be back at home and have a performance like this. We have to give credit to central. They did everything they were instructed to do and that made our job hard tonight. We created chances, but we didn't have enough consistency or quality in our attack. The great thing about our group is that they will bounce back and be excited to play again on Saturday."

Jacqueline Blakeley, Kathryn Nyone, and Chloe Gellhaus led the offensive charge. Blakeley and Nyone tied for the team high with four shots each. Gellhaus sent three shots toward the Central keeper.

The Falcons turned to Landry Schoennauer in goal on Thursday. The first-year keeper was excellent, racking up four saves in the shutout effort. It was Schoennauer's second shutout of the season. Her last shutout came against San Francisco State on Sept. 7 in another match that ended 1-0.

"Landry hasn't played in a while and was great tonight," Busey said. "She rose to the challenge. Defensively, we did some good things tonight and limited their opportunities. Again, our quality going forward needs to be better to win games in conference."

SPU returns to Interbay Soccer Stadium on Saturday when they host Northwest Nazarene in the team's Unity Game. The match starts at 4:30 p.m.
