PORTLAND, Ore. – As the 2022-23 season progressed,
Schuyler Berry's presence – and impact – on the basketball court for the Seattle Pacific Falcons became more noticeable.
Coaches around the Great Northwest Athletic Conference certainly noticed. They have voted the 6-foot-3 junior to this year's Preseason All-GNAC team that was announced on Friday.
"I'm really excited that the conference has recognized Schuyler because I see it every day," head coach
Mike Simonson said. "She's probably the most intelligent player I've coached in my time at SPU – and I've coached some pretty smart kids. Sky is very intelligent. She has a tremendous feel for the game."
Schuyler Berry
Berry played all 28 games last winter, one of four SPU players to do so, and got five starting calls. A center, she averaged 7.4 points per game on a team-high .472 shooting from the field (77 of 163) and pulled down 3.4 rebounds per game. She had 94 boards altogether with nearly half of those (43) at the offensive end. She also reached up and got her hands on 16 blocked shots, and tied her career high with three assists on three different occasions.
"She's an efficient scorer, but she's a tremendous passer for her size," Simonson said. "My guess is the reason the rest of the conference voted her preseason all-conference is they see how she affects the game in so many different areas, and we see it every day in practice.:
Berry set single-game career highs in nearly every major statistical category: 15 points (at Central Washington), 10 rebounds (vs. Colorado Mines), three steals (at Holy Names) and six blocked shots (at Dominican). She scored in double-digits 12 times and shot 50 percent or better from the field 13 times.
Berry was the only Falcon voted to the 15-player team.
Mike Simonson
"She's an incredible player, but an even better teammate," Simonson said. "Everyone loves playing with Schuyler because she's always getting her teammates involved, and she's always efficient in her decisions whether it's shooting passing or dribbling.
"Everyone is always excited when they're on Schuyler's team," he added, "and I'm glad she's on ours."
Seattle Pacific tips off the season on Monday with an exhibition game against the Washington Huskies in Hec Edmundson Pavilion. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. A home exhibition against Pacific of Oregon is set for next Friday Nov. 3, at 6:00 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion.
