SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team continues early-season conference play this weekend with a match on the road and then one at home. SPU opens the weekend at Western Washington on Thursday at 7 p.m. followed by a home match against Montana State University Billings on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
QUOTABLE
"It's a big week for the team. We head north to play Western on Thursday, and then we are excited to be back at Interbay for our first conference game at home on Saturday. The GNAC is extremely tight, and as we've seen in results over the first weekend, margins in this conference are incredibly small. We've been pleased with several aspects of our performances, but I think we all felt we left some opportunities to be more dangerous on the table against NNU. We have a lot of control in games, but we need to execute the moments we create and upgrade to better opportunities when we can. Western and Billings are two tough, well-coached teams who present us with different challenges, but I know the guys are up for it and are excited to get back on the field this week." – head coach Kevin Sakuda.
LAST TIME OUT
The Falcons opened GNAC play against Northwest Nazarene last Thursday. SPU battled back into the match with a second-half goal and earned the 1-1 draw with the Nighthawks.
Coming out of the break, the Falcons went on the attack. Orlando Erazo created a chance for Raymundo Mendez. Mendez found the back of the net, leveling the match 1-1. It was his fourth goal this season. Mendez is tied for third in the conference in goals scored this season.
The Falcons consistently threatened throughout the second half. They put up 10 shots during that time. In total, four shots were on frame for SPU. Cameron Yriondo ripped a shot in the 85th minute. In the final minute, Christopher Soto nearly had a game-winner for SPU.
Donovahn Allen, Isaac Ketcham, and Jackson Goode played well defensively for the Falcons. The team faced 14 shots, with just three being on goal. Mitchell Wilson made the start in goal for the Falcons. He made two saves on the day.
