SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team celebrated eight seniors before Saturday's regular-season finale against Simon Fraser, as the Falcons and Red Leafs dueled to a 1-1 tie.
The Falcons wrapped up the regular season Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship on Thursday. They beat Western Washington 2-0. Before the game began, SPU honored Mackenzie Aiken, Marissa Bankey, Sophie Beadle, Jacqueline Blakeley, Lauren Forster, Chloe Gellhaus, Mia Mahaffey, and Rylee Pierce.
"This is a really special group of women that have been a part of a ton of success here," head coach Arby Busey said. "They've contributed in tremendous ways in the success they've been able to share with their teammates. We'd hoped to get a better result tonight to honor them, but to finish the regular season undefeated in the conference is a testament to the leadership they've provided this year."
Lauren Snedeker got the Falcons on the board in the 18th minute. The ball was sent into the box where the Red Leafs misplayed a clearance. Snedker cleaned it up with a one-timer from 10 yards out. Snedeker's second goal of the season put the Falcons up 1-0.
Mercedes Cullen was in goal for the Falcons. She played well, making five saves in 90 minutes of play.
SPU closes the regular season ranked 20th in the United Soccer Coaches National Top 25 poll and was third in the NCAA West Region Rankings.
The Falcons enter next weekend's GNAC Tournament as the top seed and will take on the Red Leafs in a rematch in Ellensburg, Wash. on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
