ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team picked up its first victory of the season thanks to a pair of first-career goals from Raymundo Mendez and Luis Zazueta, as the Falcons topped the Seawolves 2-1.
"The boys played great today," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "It was truly a team performance. It was great to see the guys that came off the bench come in and help to raise the level. Everybody did their part today. Thrilled for Zaz and Ray to get on the scoreboard. The first goal of your career is special, and I'm happy they get to experience that together."
Mendez arrives at SPU from Columbia Basin College as one of the best forwards in the NWAC. He was an All-West Region honoree. Mendez has shown his ability to score early in his Falcon career.
Mendez broke the seal on the scoring early in the contest. Tyler Speer set Mendez up for a quality finish in the 4th minute. Mendez's goal against the Seawolves was the first of his career.
Zazueta's first career goal proved to be the game-winner for the Falcons. It came early in the second half in the 48th minute. A firm strike found the back of the net, putting the Falcons up 2-0.
Cam Welty played all 90 minutes in goal for the Falcons. He had a light day of work, making two saves. An 89th-minute goal from the Seawolves was the only thing keeping Welty from a clean sheet.
The Falcons take another trip to California next weekend to play a pair of PacWest Conference opponents. The weekend starts on Thursday when the Falcons play Point Loma at 4 p.m. in San Diego.
