SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team jumped out to an early lead against Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday morning, but a miraculous goal from the Lumberjacks with two seconds remaining in the match stunned the Falcons as they fell 4-3.
"Cal Poly Humboldt brought an attitude, effort, and an inspired performance that we could keep up with," head coach
Arby Busey said. "Credit to them and what they did to us. It was hard to match their intensity today."
Like Thursday, the Falcons flew into the lead with an early goal.
Sophie Beadle worked down the right side of the field, making her way to the end line. She crossed the ball into the box on the ground that found the foot of Blakeley. Blakeley finished, putting the ball away in the lower left corner. SPU suddenly had an early 1-0 lead.
Landry Schonnauer got the start in goal for the Falcons. She was tested early, as the Lumberjacks had a dangerous chance in the 10th minute. Schoennauer swatted the ball away, keeping the visitors off the board. She'd finish the match with six saves, setting a new career high.
The Falcons put together another quick strike in the 24th minute. Like the first goal, Beadle was the catalyst in creating the chance. She outworked her defender before sending the ball in front of the box.
Lauren Forster received the pass and finished with one touch. Forster's first goal of the season put SPU up 2-1.
"Beadle is somebody that has been a stalwart for us and somebody we count on," Busey said. "She's been elected as a captain by her teammates. She's someone we lean into when times are tough like they were today. She did what she could in carrying the load today, but it wasn't enough to handle what our opponent brought."
SPU added to their lead in the 40th minute of the match.
Taylor Krueger connected a pass to
Marissa Bankey, setting her up just outside the 18-yard box. Bankey ripped a shot into the top left corner. Bankey's highlight goal gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead that they carried into halftime.
Emilia Long was unbelievable for the Lumberjacks throughout the day. She scored all four of her team's goals. The goal count includes three second-half goals and the improbable game-winner in the 90th minute. She made a long run down the right side before shooting from seven yards out to give the 'Jacks the win.
"We'll work on getting into a better place after this one," Busey said. "This one is going to hurt for a little bit. The great thing is the lesson we learned today how much hard work and effort can pay off and make a difference. If that's the gift we get from today and have to swallow a tough pill in terms of the result, we'll be better for it."
The Falcons return to action in California next weekend. Their next game is against San Francisco State on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. They'll close out their road trip to California on Saturday, Sept. 9 against Chico State at 7 p.m.
