SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team hosted Simon Fraser in a Halloween Great Northwest Athletic Conference match on Thursday evening when the Falcons were spooked by a late goal from the Red Leafs and fell 2-1.
"It's a frustrating one because we were as good as we have been in creating chances but weren't able to capitalize on any of them," head coach
Kevin Sakuda said. "We gave away a couple of set pieces late and that's the difference. Credit to Simon Fraser, they never quit and came up big when it counted."
The Falcons opened the match on the attack in the first half. SPU broke a scoreless tie in the 15th minute.
Connor Tollan gathered a cross before flicking it onto
Raymundo Mendez. Mendez tapped the ball in from four yards out to put the Falcons up 1-0. It was his 9thgoal of the 2024 season.
The Falcons offense was humming in the first half. SPU sent in nine shots to just three from the Red Leafs. The trend continued throughout the second half. The Falcons launched 15 more shots toward the Red Leafs. After 90 minutes, the Falcons had a 24-11 advantage in shots, with a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.
SFU did create eight corner kicks throughout the match. Two of which proved to be massive for the visitors. Brandon Torresan sent a ball into the box that bounced out to the 18-yard box in the middle of the field. Kundalini Bien-Aimé Dominique blasted a shot from 20 yards out that got through the mess of defenders and scored. The Falcons and Red Leafs were tied in the 78th minute.
In the 89th minute, the Red Leafs took advantage of another corner. This time, Aaron Colbourne sent a shot in toward the back corner, where Daniel Hobson dove in with a flying header to score from three yards out. The Falcons couldn't answer in the limited time that was left and fell to the Red Leafs.
The Falcons are back on the road Thursday, Nov. 7 when they play Montana State University Billings at 5 p.m.
