SPU Falls to Dominican in Canada Finale

Falcons clean up on the glass, but points are hard to come by in 59-42 loss

LANGLEY, B.C. – All afternoon long on Sunday, the Seattle Pacific Falcons crashed the backboards.

They just weren't able to light up the scoreboard.

Layne Kearns scored eight points and pulled down nine rebounds, Hunter Beirne added eight points and six rebounds, but SPU once again was frigid from the field in dropping a 59-42 decision to Dominican on the final day of the D2CCA Canadian Tip-Off Classic.

Haylie Ohta also tallied eight point for the Falcons (0-3), who shot just 22.2, hitting 16 of 72.

"It was like there was a seal over our basket," coach Karen Byers said. "We were able to get our shots up – we took 20 more than the other team – but we just couldn't finish them. We were either fading away and not creating the contact, or it was just a bad shot for the wrong person.

"Once we started to not really hit any, it went downhill and we just lost our confidence."

Seattle Pacific was still well within range at halftime, down just 29-22, but then missed its first five shots of the third quarter before newcomer Peyton Bergevin broke through with a 3-pointer at the 6:21 mark to narrow it back down to a single-digit deficit at 34-25

Dominican (1-2) answered with eight straight points, stretching its lead to 42-25 while keeping the Falcons off the board for another 2½ minutes. The Penguins maintained at least a 12-point lead the rest of the way.

SPU cleaned the glass with 48 rebounds, with 17 of those coming at the offensive end. The high game last season was 49.

"That's something we've definitely started to work on and call out," Byers said. "Hunter and Layne, our two guards, were rebounding and doing a great job. That's a step in the right direction. I'm glad we're getting that I-want-the-ball mindset."

BY THE NUMBERS
-- Through the first three games, the Falcons are averaging 41.3 rebounds. That's well above last season's average of 35.7
-- Haylie Ohta's eight points included the 100th of her career. She now has 103.
-- Hunter Beirne, with her eight points, is now just three away from her career 500th.
-- SPU's defense limited Dominican to 36.2 percent shooting (21 of 58) and allowed just eight offensive rebounds.
