MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer league got an early lead against Western Oregon on Saturday morning but the 14th-ranked Wolves powered back with three goals to take down the Falcons 3-1.
The Falcons knew they'd be against a quality opponent in Saturday's match against the Wolves. WOU leads the GNAC with a 9-1 conference record and 27 points. The United Soccer Coaches national poll has the Wolves 14th in the country. Still, the Falcons played hard against the Wolves.
The Falcons were on the attack early in Saturday's match. In the 18th minute, JJ Diaz worked the ball down the left side and into the 18-yard box where he was taken down from behind. The result of the play was a penalty kick for the Falcons.
Raymundo Mendez entered the match as the GNAC's leading goal scorer. He'd grow his lead once again against the Wolves. He was the one to take and make the penalty kick earned by Diaz. Mendez scored his 11th goal of the season and is the only player with double-digit goals in the conference.
The Wolves stormed back into the match. Alex Grignon tied the match in the 38th minute off an assist from Ethan Fisher. Abraham Villalobos gave WOU the lead in the 42nd minute. Michael Divano made the score 3-1 in the 52nd minute.
SPU had seven shots, with three being on goal. Mendez, Diaz, and Lukas Shriner had the best chances for the Falcons. Pierluca Carnovale got the start in goal and made two saves in the match.
The Falcons play their final road match of the regular season next Thursday in Nampa, Idaho against Northwest Nazarene. The match kicks off at 5 p.m. PST.
