SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific Athletics Department congratulates track athletes
Ben Sheirbon and
Maya Ewing as this week's SPU Athletics Falcons of the Week.
BEN SHEIRBON / MEN'S TRACK
WHAT HE DID: After battling through numerous injuries during his career, Sheirbon was first across the finish line for the first time as a Falcon, winning his heat of the 1500 meters at last Saturday's Wildcat Invitational in Ellensburg. Sheirbon posted a season-best time of 4 minutes, 13.53 seconds, edging in front as he started down the homestretch and hanging on at the wire..
QUOTABLE: "It was big breakthrough for him, and it was great to see him get the win," Falcons assistant coach / distance coach Eric Hansen said. "He has been putting in the work. Sometimes, it takes time to show it in races. He ran a good race, put himself in there, mixed it up in the front with a group of his teammates, and he found a gear in the last 150 meters that not a lot of guys have."
MAYA EWING / WOMEN'S TRACK
WHAT SHE DID: Ewing raced to her first college victory, taking the lead with just less than two laps to go and pulling away to take the 1500 at the Wildcat Invitational. Ewing clocked a season-best time of 4 minutes, 48.49 seconds.
.
QUOTABLE: "A win is a win, and we're going to celebrate those," distance coach Eric Hansen said. "She's getting a lot more consistent in the 1500 right now, and we're trying to get that to translate to some of the longer distances as we gear up to run the steeplechase at conference in a couple weeks."
