SEATTLE – When the game was on the line, that's where the Seattle Pacific Falcons ultimately won it.
Jonas La Tour scored 22 points,
Jaxon Nap grabbed 15 rebounds, and SPU hit 16 straight free throws as part of a game-breaking 21-9 scoring run on Saturday afternoon to beat Simon Fraser in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game, 71-56
Mason Landdeck added 12 points and
Julian Mora chipped in 10 for the Falcons (7-9, 3-2 GNAC), who won their third straight game.
An 18-point lead early in the second half had melted all the way down to three at 50-47 with 8:01 still left in Saturday's contest in Brougham Pavilion.
But SPU kept the Red Leafs (5-11, 1-5 GNAC) off the board for the next 4 minutes, 37 seconds while racking up 10 straight points of its own, with six of those at the line: 4 of 4 by LaTour, 2 of 2 by Nap.
Among those 21 points that helped put the game out of reach, La Tour was 8 of 8 and Landdeck was 6 of 6. For the game, SPU was a near-perfect 21 of 22 (95.5 percent) on free throws, with LaTour winding up at 9 of 9.
The Falcons and Red Leafs traded baskets early in the game. The first half featured eight ties and four lead changes. The teams were tied at 20 when the Falcons broke away from the Red Leafs.
Jonas La Tour drove through the lane and scored, starting a 14-2 run over the final 8:09 in the first half.
Julian Mora led the charge with five points, all coming at the end of the run.
The Falcon defense locked down the Red Leafs during that stretch. SFU went 1-for-10 over the final eight minutes of the first half.
Mora and La Tour led the team in scoring in the first half. Mora was sensational, scoring 10 points off the bench over the first 20 minutes. La Tour scored nine and added three rebounds in the half. Six more Falcons scored one basket each to give SPU a 34-22 lead at halftime.
The Falcons hit the road next week. They travel to Ellensburg, Wash. to take on Central Washington on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a match up with Northwest Nazarene on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. PST in Nampa, Idaho.
