Falcons Stunned by Ultra-Late Goal From Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team's season came to an end suddenly in the second round of the NCAA Tournament when Midwestern State scored a golden goal in with 15 seconds left in double-overtime to win the game 1-0.

"You have to give credit to Midwestern State," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "They are a really good group that put us under attack today. Our group kept fighting and battling, and on days we weren't at our best they never quit. I'm very proud of this group."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brian Lanier was sensational throughout the entire match for the Falcons.
  • Lainier made a big save in the 26th minute, keeping the match tied 0-0.
  • SPU had one of its best chances to scored when JP Guzman ripped a shot off a rebounded shot from JJ Diaz.
    • Guaman smoked the post, and the match stayed tied 0-0.
  • Lanier made back-to-back saves in the 71st and 74th minutes, keeping the match level.
  • In the 79th minute, the Mustangs hammered a shot that Kasey Toevs blocked at the front of the goal to keep the Mustangs off the scoreboard.
  • In the 98th minute of the match, the Mustangs had consecutive chances with the second bouncing off the woodwork.
  • Finally, with 15 seconds left double-overtime, Parker Plaxco sent the Mustangs into the next round of the NCAA Tournament and ended SPU's season.

  • The SPU defense withstood 34 shots from the Mustangs, with 12 being on goal.
    • SPU had five shots in the entire match, with two being on goal.
  • Lanier made 10 saves for the Falcons in a brilliant performance.
  • Guzman led the Falcons with three shots, one of which was on goal.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Falcons faced the most shots since Sonoma State had 27 on Sept. 5, 2019.
  • Lanier had 10 saves for the Falcons for the first time since Jordan Marwood had 12 against West Texas A&M in 2019.
