PORTLAND, Ore. – In scoring 445 of her own points,
Hunter Beirne was bound to catch some attention from opposing coaches.
Having a hand in another 270 points when other players scored off one of her passes caught plenty of attention, too.
Beirne did all of that and more during the past 4½ months. On Tuesday, the fifth-year Seattle Pacific point guard was formally recognized for her efforts when she was named to the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference second team.
It is Beirne's first All-GNAC selection. She was one of 23 players – seven on the first team, seven on the second team, and nine honorable mention – to make the elite postseason list. Beirne was the only Falcon chosen.
Beirne ranked in the top 10 for both stat categories: No. 8 in scoring (14.4) and No. 7 in assists (3.8). She was one of four players to be among the top 10 in both.
Karen Byers
"It's a great honor for her that she totally deserves," coach
Karen Byers said. "She outdid herself this year. She was consistent in scoring a bunch of points, and she was our floor general. She just works hard and she's there to support the team. I'm just glad she's getting the recognition that she's getting."
In starting all 31 games, Beirne's numbers this season were by far the best of her career across almost every major statistical category.
Hunter Beirne scored 445 points in her 31 games.
-- The 445 points nearly matched the 476 she scored through the first four years of her career combined (including the injury-shortened Covid season in 2020-21).
-- Her 117 assists made her the first triple-digit playmaker for SPU since the 2014-15 season. That included a career-high 10 on Feb. 8 at Saint Martin's.
-- Of those 117 helpers, 36 led to 3-point baskets.
-- She had her best shooting season in all three categories: .433 from the field, .315 from 3-point range, and .782 at the free throw line. Her total makes – 169 total field goals, 39 treys, and 78 free throws – were all single-season bests.
-- Other bests were 30 steals and eight blocked shots.
The only stat where she didn't top a previous season's total was rebounding. Beirne finished with 134; she grabbed 144 in 2022-23. Ironically, in her final game last Saturday against Simon Fraser, she pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds. Along with her 25 points – including the 900
th of her career – that gave Beirne her second career double-double. (The other one was 11 points to go with her 10 assists at Saint Martin's.)
Her final career totals were 921 points, 287 assists, 402 rebounds, and 90 steals.
"I knew she could do it if that was in her mindset," Byers said of Beirne's points production. "Sometimes, she will distribute, but she really turned it on this year and wanted to get hers."
For all of her accomplishments on the court, Beirne also has numerous academic honors. Last month, she was named to the GNAC All-Academic team for the fourth time, having completed her undergraduate double-major in Politics / Philosophy / Economics, and Global Development, and currently working toward her master of arts in teaching.
She also was a College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District pick last season.
