Falcons Offensive Outburst Beats Wolves 80-58

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Five members of the Seattle Pacific University women's basketball team scored in double-figures on Saturday, leading to the team's highest point-total of the season and their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory of the season on the road when the Falcons beat Western Oregon 80-58.

"I'm really proud of how we played," head coach Karen Byers said. "We had a plan, stuck to it, and played as a team for the team. We shot with confidence and had four consistent quarters. I'm really proud of how Ohta led the team, how the Layla and Jade defended and played during a fast physical game." 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons opened the first quarter against the Wolves with a quick 9-5 run.
    • Grace Turley provided the offense, scoring seven of the first nine points for the Falcons.
  • Grace Leasure's layup sparked a 12-6 run for the Falcons that lasted the final 4:46 of the first quarter.
    • SPU went 6-for-8 from the field during that stretch.
  • The Falcons led 21-17 before outscoring the Wolves 19-9 in the second quarter.
    • SPU knocked down five 3-pointers during the second quarter.
      • Grace Mertes hit three of those 3-pointers and led the team with nine points in the second quarter.
  • The Falcons led 40-26 at halftime.
  • The Falcons found their offensive rhythm again late in the third quarter, scoring 16 points over the final 4:50 of the period.
    • SPU went 5-for-8 from the field and were led by six points from Leasure.
  • The Falcons opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, extending their lead to 17 points.
  • SPU finished the game well, using a 13-4 run to secure the win over the Wolves.
  • The Falcons beat the Wolves 80-58.

  • The Falcons went 28-for-64 (43.8 percent) from the field, with five players scoring in double-figures.
  • Leasure was spectacular for the Falcons, leading the team in points (16) and rebounds (9), while dishing out six assists, blocking three shots, and nabbing two steals.
  • Kearns scored 15 points with six rebounds for the Falcons.
  • Mertes, Turley, and L. Senderson scored 10 points each for the Falcons.
  • Haylie-Anne Ohta dished out a game-high eight assists.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • SPU scored the most points in a single game this season against Western Oregon on Saturday.
    • 22 points is the largest margin of victory in a game for the Falcons this season.
  • The Falcons knocked down 11 3-pointers on Saturday, the most in a single game this season.
  • The Falcons had 21 assists on Saturday, the most in a single game this season.
  • Leasure grabbed a career-high nine rebounds for the Falcons on Saturday.
  • L. Senderson (10), J Senderson (7), set new career-highs in points scored for the Falcons on Saturday.
  • Ohta dished out a career-high eight assists on Saturday for the Falcons.

The Falcons are back at home next weekend for two more GNAC games. SPU hosts #16 Central Washington on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 5:15 p.m., followed by a game against Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 4:15 p.m.
