13th-Ranked Falcons Rally Late to Top Vikings, Stay Unbeaten at Interbay

SEATTLE – The 13th-ranked Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team trailed for nearly 70 minutes before two late goals from Kasey Toevs and JP Guzman hoisted the Falcons past Western Washington 2-1 on Saturday night to remain undefeated at Interbay Soccer Stadium in 2026.

FROM THE COACH
"It wasn't our best performance tonight, and Western made it difficult for us, but we found a way to get it done," head coach Kevin Sakuda said. "Credit to our guys; they never quit and continued to compete and believe in each other until the final whistle. Sometimes you must find ways to win when we aren't the sharpest, and I'm proud of the resilience this group showed tonight."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Vikings struck early, as Jose Perez scored unassisted in the fourth minute to put the Vikings up 1-0.
  • The Falcons controlled the ball for long stretches afterward but couldn't find an equalizer, carrying the 1-0 deficit into halftime.
  • In the 72nd minute, a foul from the Vikings gave the Falcons just outside the box near the end line, where Brady Reed played a perfect ball into the box that was headed home by Toevs to tie the match 1-1.
  • The Falcons took the lead in the 79th minute of the match when Judah Straight's shot was kept out of the net by a WWU defender.
  • The ball trickled in front of the net for Guzman to blast it into the roof, giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead with just over 10 minutes left to play.
  • SPU's defense held firm, preventing even a shot from the Vikings over the remaining time to take the match 2-1.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • The Falcons finished with 11 shots, four of which were on goal, to nine shots from the Vikings, with five being on goal.
  • Rafael Lucio and Guzman tied with a team-high three shots each, with Guzman's goal being on target.
  • Willem Ficek played 90 minutes in goal for the Falcons, making four saves while allowing one goal in the win.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Saturday's victory over the Vikings secured the regular season sweep for the Falcons.
    • The last time the Falcons beat the Vikings in both of their regular season contests was 11 years ago in 2015, when SPU beat WWU 2-1 on Oct. 1, 2015, and 4-0, on Oct. 17, 2015.
  • The Falcons now own a four-match winning streak over the Vikings, dating back to Oct. 25, 2025, and including a 2025 GNAC Championship semifinal match.
  • Since 2008, SPU's longest winning streak against WWU is five matches, running from Oct. 31, 2013, to Oct. 17, 2015.
  • With Saturday's victory over the Vikings, the Falcons improve to 8-0-0 at Interbay Soccer Stadium this season with two home games remaining in the 2026 regular season.
    • The last time the Falcons went unbeaten at home was in 2015, when the team finished the regular season 7-0-3 at Interbay Soccer Stadium.
    • SPU's record for consecutive home wins is 22, set from Nov. 6, 1991, to Oct. 22, 1994.
  • With four matches remaining in the regular season, another victory will secure the winningest season the Falcons have had under sixth-year head coach Kevin Sakuda.

The Falcons make their final road trip of the regular season next weekend when they play Western Oregon on Thursday, Oct. 22, at noon, followed by a match against Saint Martin's on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 3:00 p.m.
