SEATTLE – This week in Seattle Pacific University Athletics, women's soccer takes on Cal State East Bay on Tuesday, women's volleyball plays four matches at the Hawaii Challenge, and the 25^th-ranked SPU men's soccer hosts Westmont and Point Loma on Thursday and Saturday.

ABOUT THE FALCONS

• The 25^th-ranked Falcons open their 2026 season by taking down 5^th-ranked Stanislaus State 3-1.
  • The Falcons got on the board first when JJ Diaz slid the ball to JP Guzman, who hammered it into the back of the net to put SPU up 1-0. In the 24^th minute
    • Guzman's goal was the first of his career with the Falcons.
  • Just moments into the start of the second half, Isaac Ketcham moved the ball forward to newcomer Judah Straight, who skipped it into the back of the net from distance to put the Falcons up 2-1.
    • Straight's first career goal for the Falcons was also his first career game-winner in his first match at SPU.
  • Rafael Lucio sealed it for the Falcons in the 88^th minute with a goal that gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead, putting it out of reach of the Warriors.
• After going down two goals in the first half, the 25th-ranked Falcons stormed back with an offensive onslaught in the second half of their match against Chico State, beating the Wildcats 4-2.
  • In the 55th minute, the Falcons cut into the lead when JP Guzman snuck a ball around the Wildcat defense to move the score to 2-1.  
  • Shortly after, the Falcons tied the game when Sebastian Rangel pushed the ball forward to Judah Straight before David Ochoa tapped it into the back of the net.  
  • Straight wasn't done impacting the game, as he gave the Falcons the lead in the 62nd minute.  
  • In the 77th minute, the Falcons put the game away when Rangel sent in a corner kick that Kasey Toevs headed into the goal, giving SPU a 4-2 lead. 
  • Willem Ficek and the SPU defense kept Chico off the board for the entire second half, helping the Falcons pick up the 4-2 victory.  
• The SPU men's soccer team celebrated the 40th anniversary of the 1986 national championship-winning team with a halftime ceremony in front of the fans at Interbay Soccer Stadium.

"The first weekend prepared us well for the matches ahead," head coach Jason Rhine said. "Part of that was competing against a strong group of teams that challenged us to grow and execute at a high level, which will be essential against another talented field this weekend. It also came from navigating illness, 110-degree heat, flight delays, injury, and all the other big and small challenges that come with travel and competition. While no team wants to face adversity, working through those moments together is an important part of any season, and I was proud of how our team responded in a variety of difficult situations. We are excited to be in Hawaii, spend more time together as a team, and embrace the opportunities and challenges that await us both on and off the court."
 
ABOUT THE FALCONS

• Christina Lopez and Megan Omlid were named to the 2026 GNAC Preseason All-Conference Team on Aug. 25.
  • Lopez appeared in 98 sets across 26 matches for the Falcons in 2025, leading the team with 476 digs and an average of 4.86 digs per set. 
  • Omlid appeared in 98 sets across 26 matches for the Falcons in 2025, leading the team with 343 kills, 3.50 kills per set, 36 service aces, 394.5 points, and 4.03 points per set
• The Falcons opened their 2026 season against CUI at the Yotes Classic Showcase last Thursday evening, where the Falcons responded well after dropping the first set to beat the Golden Eagles 3-1 (15-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21).
  • The Falcons finished the match with 47 kills and a .278 hitting percentage.
  • SPU thrived in the second set, smashing home 11 kills on a .435 hitting percentage
  • Audra Rose was excellent with a .600 hitting percentage and 10 kills, while adding five aces and four total blocks.
    • Rose had a career-high 17.5 points for the Falcons in their season-opening victory over CUI.
    • She also had a career-high five aces in Thursday's victory over the Golden Eagles.
• After dropping both matches on Friday, the Falcons used a balanced offensive attack to beat Westmont 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23).  
  • The Falcons totaled 54 kills on a .208 hitting percentage in last Saturday morning's match.  
  • SPU hit .342 in the opening set of the contest.  
  • Eight Falcons recorded a kill against the Warriors.  
  • Amaya Evans led the team with 12 kills on a .242 hitting percentage with two digs and an assist.  
  • Joslyn Greff had 10 kills on a .290 hitting percentage with two digs.  
• Evans and Greff were selected to the Yotes Classic Showcase All-Tournament Team for their performance last weekend.
  • Evans finished the weekend with 40 kills while hitting .297 for the Falcons.
  • Greff leads the team with 45 kills after four matches.

"We are excited about how we've started the season," head coach Arby Busey said. "But we realize how much work there is still to do. We are learning and growing every day, and it has been really fun so far. We want to continue enjoying our opportunities together."
 
ABOUT THE FALCONS

• The Falcons opened their season on the road against Chico State on Thursday night, where SPU scored three unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes of the match to earn a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats.
  • Andie Buckley helped the Falcons chip into the Wildcats' lead in the 76^th minute, when she snuck one in the lower right corner to move the score to 2-1.
    • Buckley's first goal of 2026 was the ninth of her career with the Falcons.
  • Then in the 84^th minute, Ava Suarez scored the equalizer off an assist from Sophie Haney that tied the match at 2-2.
  • Logann Dukes became the hero in the 88^th minute of the match, when she scored a laser into the upper right corner with an assist from Grace Coston.
    • Duke's game-winning goal was the first of her career with the Falcons.
• The Falcons played Jessup last Saturday morning, where Haley Teofilo and Ashlyn Valdovinos powered the Falcons to a 2-1 victory over
  • In the 11th minute, Teofila put the Falcons on the board thanks to an assist from Nora Patterson.  
    • Teofilo's first-half goal was the first of her career with the Falcons.  
  • SPU added to its lead in the 26th minute when Sophie Hannay set up Valdivons for a goal that put the Falcons up 2-0.  
    • Valdovinos scored for the seventh time in her career with the Falcons.
