NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament
West Regional Semifinal
Brougham Pavilion/Seattle, Wash.
Saturday, March 13, 2010
(No. 6 seed) Chico State 86, (No. 7 seed) Humboldt State 76
CHICO STATE HEAD COACH BRIAN FOGEL
(On the game)
“When you get this far, you are going to play against teams that obviously can score and do good things. We eliminated two of their three scorers and I was really pleased with that.”
(On the run late in game)
“We have done this more than one time. The word that I use for this team is ‘resilient.’ We are absolutely resilient. The thing about it is that it is a different person night in and night out.”
CHICO STATE SENIOR GUARD MELISSA RICHARDSON
(On game plan)
“This is our fourth time playing Humboldt State so it has been a battle every game. This time we were trying to lock down on their players and not try to double down on anyone. We were just trying to make them play true.”
(On winning the game after being down late)
“Taylor (Lydon) hit a three and everyone just went with it. Then we got a couple of steals, a layup and free throws and then it was a five-point game and anything can happen. I think Taylor’s three really started the momentum.”
(On the difference between this game and last game against Humboldt State)
“We didn’t allow any of their shooters to shoot. Humboldt is a shooting team and if you lock down on their shooters and just let one player go off and do their own thing and you lock down on the other people then I think it is a pretty fair game.”
HUMBOLDT STATE HEAD COACH JODDIE GLEASON
(On what turned the tide in Chico’s favor)
“Chico came down and made plays and got to the free throw line. Synchro (Bull) and Natasha (Smith) were real tough to guard off the dribble. They penetrated and set up (Melissa) Richardson and (Courtney) Harrison, and they stuck it.”
(On the fatigue factor)
“I could have given them a breather here and there, but you kind of go with your horses, and I left them in there.”
(On a strong finish that included the CCAA tournament title)
“At the end of the season, we lost four straight and we could have crumbled. But with the leadership of our seniors, they refused to let down and stop playing.”
(On being able to rally on Friday against UCSD but not on Saturday against Chico)
We dug ourselves a hole on Friday and had some do-or-die time. The experience of the conference tournament really helped us last night. But in that situation, when it’s do or die, you have to make big plays and you have to make stops. Tonight, it was Chico making more shots than us.”
