NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament
West Regional Semifinal
Brougham Pavilion/Seattle, Wash.
Saturday, March 13, 2010
(No. 1 seed) Seattle Pacific 52, (No. 4 seed) Alaska Anchorage 48
SEATTLE PACIFIC HEAD COACH JULIE van BEEK
(On the game)
“It’s a feeling of exultation for sure, because if anything, we wanted it so bad in the second half that we quit doing the little things right. We were just playing hard, but not always playing smart. That hurt us a little bit, so I was relieved that we were able to come back. Melissa Reich’s three-point play -- that was a big one, and then we were able to get on a roll again.”
(Did this have the feel of a championship game, even though it was a semifinal?)
“Totally. And it did last week, too, at Anchorage. We were playing for the GNAC championship outright. So coming back to play them again, just with our history (between the teams), we’re going to celebrate today. And then tomorrow when we get back on that floor, we’ll turn that page. It was a huge victory. You have to beat the best to be the best and Anchorage has been the best in the region the past two years, at least in the postseason.”
(On the feeling of not losing to Anchorage again in the tournament)
“I don’t care who you lose to, it would have been a loss. It would have been a loss where if it had been because of offensive rebounds I think it would be a loss where we felt like we beat ourselves. I don’t think you’re scared of who you play. But if someone beats you, (make them) beat you. You don’t beat yourself.”
(On being able to maintain that intensity on Monday)
“We want to go to the Elite Eight. The bottom line is we’re going to enjoy today but we still have another step to climb. We’ve never been to Elite Eight with this group of kids and we want to do that.”
(On Chico State)
“We have to take every possession because Chico is a very good team, and they have improved a lot since we played them last December.
SEATTLE PACIFIC SENIOR GUARD DAESHA HENDERSON
(On the game)
“We wanted it really bad. The last two years, we lost to them in Sweet 16. Deep down, we knew it was our game and our time. We did a good job of hitting those last free throws, and Melissa (Reich) did an awesome job of running down the board (on the miss) and we did a good job of remaining composed.”
(On missing two straight free throws near the end)
“Everyone gets a little jittery. I missed my first one, thought about it too much rather than refocusing, then missed (again). But Mel (Reich) got the board, we got it back, I got fouled again, and I knew going to the line, I was like, ’It’s my normal thing, I do it every day, and I’m good at it.’”
(On beating Anchorage three straight times this season)
“When we beat them the first two times, we did a really good job of playing our game and coming out aggressive. We played to win instead of fear of losing, and that’s huge. We worked so hard and just came to play.”
ALASKA ANCHORAGE HEAD COACH TIM MOSER
(On the game)
“Give our team credit. They did a really good job. They won here.”
(On coming back in 2nd half)
“When you look at the stats sheet here, I’m proud of our kids. They won almost every category, except for one. “
(On his team’s effort)
“I thought the effort was there for our kids and the effort from them [SPU] was there. When you look at the stats, we won every stat besides the free throws. You should win by fifteen. There is an area there that I don’t know, maybe we foul that much more.”
