Former MLS player Kevin Reiman was hired in June 2013 as an assistant coach for the men's soccer team at Seattle Pacific University.
Reiman, 27, served as an assistant coach at Army for the 2010 and 2011 seasons before moving into the business sector in Seattle the last two years.
“I'm really excited to add Kevin to our coaching staff. He is a person that is committed to developing each guy in our program as students and soccer players, but more importantly as men,” said Collings, who directed the Falcons into the NCAA Division II Tournament in each of the past two seasons.
“Kevin has had some amazing experience with soccer and was fortunate to play in the MLS for Real Salt Lake. The transition to SPU and the recruiting process should be somewhat easy because of his experience at West Point with the United States Military Academy. Kevin understands the importance of recruiting student-athletes with great character.”
Reiman returns to the soccer arena where he reaped numerous accolades as a standout player.
A left-footed midfielder, Reiman was selected by Real Salt Lake with the third pick of the third round (28th overall) of the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft. He helped RSL reach the Western Conference finals in the team's first-ever playoff appearance, leading all reserve midfielders in minutes played while tallying a goal and four assists during the season.
He was drafted after an accomplished collegiate career that included second-team All-Big Ten honors during a two-year stay at Michigan State. After leading the Spartans with four assists as a junior in 2006, Reiman was second with five in 2007 as the team qualified for only its third NCAA Tournament appearance since 1969. In 39 total appearances at Michigan State, he started 31 contests while compiling 11 points on a goal and nine assists.
Reiman began his collegiate playing career with two seasons at national powerhouse Maryland, playing under a staff that included current Army head coach Russell Payne as an assistant coach. Reiman participated in 34 games, including six starts, as the Terrapins were crowned national champions in 2005 after making an appearance in the semifinals in 2004.
A two-time NSCAA/adidas All-American and a McDonald's High School All-America nominee, Reiman prepped at Yorktown (N.Y.) High School. He was an adidas Elite Soccer Program (ESP) All-Star during his senior campaign.
As a five-year starter for the Olympic Development Program Region-I team, Reiman competed in events throughout the country, as well as internationally in France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Ireland, England, Italy and Argentina. He also served for seven years as captain of the Yorktown Spirit club team that won four Eastern New York State Cup Championships and was a six-time New York State finalist.
Reiman earned a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from Michigan State in 2008. Prior to joining the Army staff, Reiman was the head coach of the freshman soccer team at Okemos High School in Michigan for one season.
Reiman replaces former assistant coach Nate Daligcon who left SPU in March.
“It's going to be great for our program to add someone with some new ideas,” Collings concluded. “Kevin has had the opportunity to be a part of so many great soccer programs and see how they do things. I'm excited to tap into that experience and add some things to what we're already doing at SPU.”
