SEATTLE (Nov. 1) - Emily Castro struck the final kill in the fourth game for Western Washington University, as the Vikings upended Seattle Pacific University at Brougham Pavilion in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Thursday night.
The Falcons, (13-10, 8-7 GNAC) who were riding a four match win streak, were overpowered by the Vikings (18-4, 14-1) in each game, hitting at a .107 clip to Western's .237, and fell by game scores of 30-23, 29-31, 30-20, and 30-28.
Jaime Anderson led the charge for Western with 17 kills, coupled with 14 digs and four blocks. Castro, paired 13 kills with 18 digs, while Angie Alvord led all players in aces and blocks, smacking down four and skying for six. Courtney Schneider, who leads the nation in digs per match, led all players with 36 digs.
Alyssa Given once again led her team in kills, totaling 15 for the match, adding 16 digs to boot. Given now needs to hit 67 kills over SPU's remaining matches to tie the GNAC all-time best mark for kills over a career, which stands at 1,461.
Nikki Finley had a breakout performance, nearly matching Given in kills with 14. Angie Wodrich added 12 kills and 25 digs, and Rachel Biornstad rounded out the double-digit-kill Falcons with 10.
The two teams fought long and hard in the match, knotting up the game scores 25 times over the four game match. Down 19-23 in the fourth game, SPU mounted a comeback to tie the Vikings at 24, but critical errors and two kills by Castro sealed the Falcons' fate.
The Falcons finish their regular season home matches against Central Washington on Saturday at 3 pm. The match will serve as senior night for the three graduating seniors: Given, Biornstad, and Wodrich.
