SEATTLE -- Meredith Teague gave sixth-ranked Seattle Pacific the lead early in the first half, but No. 14 Western Washington tied it up just 29 seconds after halftime Thursday, and the two Northwest women's soccer powers settled for a 1-1 tie at Interbay Stadium.
The result kept the Falcons in second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at 5-1-1. SPU is 11-1-2 overall. Western stayed atop the standings at 6-0-1, and is 10-2-1 overall. The Vikings beat SPU 1-0 on Sept. 20 when the teams met in Bellingham.
Teague (Redmond, Wash./Bellevue Christian) put Seattle Pacific on the board at the 15:50 mark.
Junior Katie Taylor (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River) dug out a ball in the right corner and sent it into the right side of the penalty area to sophomore Amanda Johnson (Duvall, Wash./Cedarcrest). Johnson got it to Teague, who was playing just inside the top of the box, and Teague drilled it through just enough of an opening in traffic and into the back left corner.
Teague's goal was her team-leading eighth of the year and the 19th of her career, but her first against Western Washington. With eight goals and seven assists, Teague has factored into nearly half (15) of SPU's 31 scoring plays this season.
The Falcons dominated the opening half, outshooting Western Washington by an 11-3 margin, and getting off six shots before the Vikings managed their first.
But just 29 seconds into the second half, Western netted the equalizer. Shelby Marcell, playing far out on the right wing about 40 yards up from the goal, sent a perfectly placed target ball toward the left post. Kelly Irving, from the top left corner of the six-yard box, twisted for a header and sent it into the upper right corner well beyond the reach of Falcons goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview).
Seattle Pacific denied the Vikings two other scoring chances at the last instant. Midway through the 33rd minute, Western got a ball onto the top right corner of Dickinson's front porch, but Falcons defender Claire Grubbs (Sterling, Va.) booted it out of danger before the Vikings could fire a shot
In the 66th minute, a corner kick from the right side by Emily Frankland went across the goalmouth. Dickinson got her hands on it, but wasn't able to reel it in, but the Falcons cleared it out of danger.
Dickinson was credited with four saves for SPU. She yielded just her second goal of the season in 650 minutes between the posts.
Goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent made four of her five saves during the first half, keeping the Vikings in the game.
Johnson nearly put one in for Seattle Pacific late in the 80th minute. She worked her way around a Vikings defender and launched one from the top of the box on the left side of the arc that flew just over the crossbar.
During the first 10-minute, sudden-death overtime, SPU's Shannon Oakes (Boise, Idaho) had a dangerous shot just outside the box on the left wing, but it flew just inches wide of the right post.
The Falcons outshot Western Washington, 17-7 despite sending just one attempt goalward during the second half. SPU launched five shots during the 20 minutes of overtime play. WWU didn't get any shots off in overtime.
Seattle Pacific returns to Interbay Stadium on Saturday to host Northwest Nazarene at 1 p.m.
