SEATTLE – Sophomore
Mallorie Gerstmann came off the bench to score her first three goals of the season, powering sixth-ranked Seattle Pacific to a 6-0 victory over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.
Gerstmann (Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) entered the game with just one career goal, tallied during her freshman season. Saturday, she registered the ninth hat trick in the eight-year history of the SPU women's program.
“It was fun watching her play,” exclaimed sixth-year SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra. “Mallorie really lifted us. She goes in and does whatever it takes to put the ball in the back of the net. That was a great effort today.
“She is a young lady who has been practicing so well and has been really hungry. The last two or three weeks of practice this is how she's been doing it and that's why she's been playing more.”
The Falcons improved to 12-1-2 with their highest goal output of the season. They retained possession of second place with a 6-1-1 GNAC record. NNU remained winless in conference play at 0-7 with a 1-13-1 overall record.
Senior
Meredith Teague (Redmond, Wash./Bellevue Christian) continued a hot streak with a goal for her fourth straight game. She opened the scoring with her team-leading ninth goal, Teague's fifth in the last four games.
The 13th-minute tally proved to be the only goal SPU needed. Teague received a
Jocelyn Charette (Lakewood, Wash./Curtis) feed from the left flank and sent a 10-yard shot into the goal at 12:24.
Gerstmann entered the game in the 22nd minute and seven minutes later netted her first goal of the season. Freshmen
Savanna Hanson (Centennial, Colo./Littleton) and
Brandi Hamre (Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap) possessed the ball and drew Crusaders goalkeeper Pip Herman off her line. Gerstmann ran on to the ball in front of an open goal and slid it in from 12 yards out at 29:14.
SPU quickly extended its 2-0 halftime advantage with a trio of goals during a six-minute span. Gerstmann netted her second goal at 52:33, a 15-yard shot into the lower right of the goal off a pass from
Janae Godoy (Yakima, Wash./West Valley).
Sophomore
Amanda Johnson (Duval, Wash./Cedarcrest) beat the goalkeeper on a breakaway and walked the ball across the goal line at 54:49 for her seventh goal of the season.
Hamre recorded her fourth goal at 58:11, rebounding a shot off the crossbar and sending it into the net from 12 yards.
Gerstmann completed the scoring, and her hat trick, with an unassisted tally at 74:12. She capped a long run with a 20-yard strike into the upper right corner.
“What I loved about today's game is that every single player that went into the game kept the level at a high level,” Sekyra said. “I thought we played great in the second half. To come out and get four goals in the second half and play at that high level consistently was great.”
Four different Falcons scored goals. Godoy was not one of them, although she was credited with two assists. Godoy had back-to-back shots hit the crossbar during a 35-second span in the 58th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Jesslyn Rahm was called upon to make just one save for SPU, which outshot the Crusaders by a 24-3 margin. Rahm posted her fifth shutout and the 10th for the team.
NNU's Herman stopped six shots.
The Falcons hit the road for a pair of home games before closing out the season with a three-game homestand. SPU plays at Central Washington on Oct. 25 and meets Northwest Nazarene again, this time in Nampa, Idaho, on Oct. 29.
The next home game for the SPU women is Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. against Cal State L.A. That is the nightcap of a doubleheader with the men, who play at 4:30 p.m.
The Nov. 1 doubleheader is Neil Callahan Night, honoring the youth soccer pioneer and former president of the Seattle Youth Soccer Association who passed away last December.
