NAMPA, Idaho – Junior forward Jocelyn Charette had a hat trick and started a run of seven second-half goals in a 21-minute span Wednesday during the sixth-ranked Seattle Pacific women's record-setting 9-0 rout of Northwest Nazarene at NNU Soccer Field.

The Falcons extended their unbeaten streak to nine games, pushing their overall record to 14-1-2 and 8-1-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. SPU remained in second place in the standings, one game behind league-leading Western Washington.

The nine-goal outburst tied the school and GNAC record established in a previous SPU-Northwest Nazarene meeting on Oct. 26, 2002. That game also ended in a 9-0 result. Western Washington owns a share of the record with a 9-0 win against Central Washington in 2005.

The Falcons led 2-0 at halftime before netting seven goals in the second half between the 50th and 70th minutes. That eclipsed their record for goals in a half that previously stood at six.

“At halftime we just talked about playing quicker, keeping the ball and not taking three and four touches. They did an amazing job of doing that and the game opened up really quick,” explained SPU coach Chuck Sekyra. “My favorite thing about coaching is when everyone contributes to a win and everyone contributed to a nice win today and that's a great feeling.”

Along with Charette's three goals and one assist, the Falcons got two goals and an assist from senior Meredith Teague (Redmond, Wash./Bellevue Christian), a goal and two assists from senior Shannon Oakes (Boise, Idaho/Boise) and two assists from junior Janae Godoy (Yakima, Wash./West Valley).

Charette (Lakewood, Wash./Curtis) increased her season output to eight goals with her first career hat trick. She has four goals and three assists in the last two outings, as she had a goal and assist in Saturday's 2-0 win at Central Washington.

“Jocelyn is at the top of her game right now and it's a lot of fun to watch,” Sekyra said. “She's playing with a lot of confidence right now and is just very hungry to score goals. It's showing in everything she does.”

Charette opened the scoring at 15:13 on a 15-yard shot inside the left post off a pass from Teague. Oakes found the net with an unassisted 30-yard strike at 25:49.

Four minutes into the second half, the goal explosion ignited when Charette converted a pass from Godoy at 49:17 to make it 3-0. Godoy set up another goal less than one minute later, feeding Teague at 50:06. That was followed 33 seconds later by Charette's third tally, assisted by Oakes at 50:39.

Oakes made it back-to-back assists at 59:45, when her shot was deflected to Teague who put it back for her team-leading 11th goal.

Charette remained in the game long enough to attempt two more shots in her pursuit to become the first Falcon to net four goals in a game. She came close as her 61st-minute shot caromed off the post, carrying to sophomore Mallorie Gerstmann (Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) who directed into the goal at 60:56.

Junior Kayla Stiegemeier (Rathdrum, Idaho/Lakeland) recorded SPU's eighth goal, at 68:37, and freshman Brandi Hamre (Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap) capped the scoring at 69:49.

“We're playing some great soccer,” Sekyra concluded. “A lot of people are playing really well and we are as healthy as we've been all year long. We have a lot of talented players.”

SPU swept the season series from the Crusaders, increasing its series advantage to 15-1. The Falcons defeated NNU 6-0 on Oct. 18 in Seattle.

Starting SPU goalkeeper Jesslyn Rahm (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) made two saves before giving way to sophomore Maddie Dickinson (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview), who had one save over the final 19 minutes. They combined for the team's 12th shutout.

Pip Herman was credited with 11 saves for the Crusaders, who were outshot by a 32-8 margin.

The Falcons return home to Interbay Stadium for a Nov. 1 non-conference game at 7 p.m. against Cal State L.A. That is the nightcap of a doubleheader with the SPU men, who play at 4:30 p.m.

Saturday's doubleheader is Neil Callahan Night, honoring the youth soccer pioneer and former president of the Seattle Youth Soccer Association who passed away last December.
