SEATTLE – Jocelyn Charette netted the equalizer with 11 minutes left in the second half Thursday as the fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific women's soccer team opened the 2008 season with a 1-1 tie against Cal State San Bernardino at Interbay Stadium.
The Falcons (0-0-1) had their 18-game home winning streak stopped. SPU posted a perfect 15-0 home mark last season en route to a 23-1 record and NCAA Division II semifinals appearance.
San Bernardino (0-0-1) got on the scoreboard first on shot by Ashley Haagsma at 23:37. She ran on to a through pass from Mackenzie Dill and slid the ball into the net from five yards out.
Charette's goal, a header from the goal mouth, came at 78:42 off a crossing pass from Meredith Teague.
Jaura Lyons registered 10 saves for the Coyotes and Jesslyn Rahm stopped three shots for SPU.
The Coyotes nearly ended the game in the sixth minute of overtime when Kristina Gomez fired a 15-yard shot that sent Rahm diving to her right for the game-saving stop. That was the only attempt of the extra session for San Bernardino, which was out shot 19-5 for the game.
The Falcons return to action, Saturday, Aug. 30 hosting San Francisco State. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium.
