SEATTLE – Freshman
Tyler Schultz scored the game-winner in the 60th minute and
Ben Lovelace recorded seven saves Saturday as the Seattle Pacific men's soccer team dealt Northwest Nazarene a 2-0 loss at Interbay Stadium.
SPU evened its overall record at 3-3-3 while maintaining a perfect Great Northwest Athletic Conference record of 2-0. The Crusaders dropped to 1-2 in conference play and 8-2-1 overall.
“Any time you can start off conference play 2-0, that's always a great thing,” said first-year Falcon coach
Mark Collings. “We're just trying to keep things moving in the right direction. We've started to gain some confidence and build some momentum. We needed that.”
The teams battled through nearly 60 scoreless minutes before the Falcons struck twice during a 12-minute span. A pair of freshman created the first tally.
Schultz (Scottsdale, Ariz.) ran on to a through pass from junior
Alec Nelson (Lynnwood, Wash./Meadowdale) and sent a 12-yard strike in the goal at 59:42.
Nelson factored into both scores as he secured the victory with his team-leading third goal. He directed a 25-yard free kick into the back of the net at 71:44.
Lovelace, a senior from Cupertino, Calif., posted his third shutout and the team's fourth.
Alexander Engemann did not make a save for the Crusaders, who were outshot 14-12, including a 9-5 second-half deficit.
NNU's closest chance came with just over three minutes left in the game when Chris Voth sent a drive just left of the goal.
The Falcons return to action, Saturday (Oct. 4) with a road game at Montana State Billings. The next home game is Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. against Western Washington.
