SEATTLE –
Jocelyn Charette is making an impression, both on the field and in the school record books.
Nights like Wednesday's three-goal performance are placing Charette's name among the legends of Seattle Pacific women's soccer. The senior forward scored the first three goals, increasing her team-leading total to 11 and propelling the fourth-ranked Falcons to a 4-0 victory over Montana State Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.
The product of Tacoma's (Wash.) Curtis High School recorded the 13th hat trick in SPU women's soccer history. That was her second of the season as she tallied a trio of goals against Grand Canyon on Sept. 11.
“We enjoy watching her play right now,” said SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra. “She's just in a zone, having fun, being herself and being very clutch. She's a great finisher.”
After playing the forward position during her first two seasons with the Falcons, Charette began this season as a midfielder. Sekyra recently returned her to the frontline, a move that paid immediate dividends.
“Playing forward is her position. She's great up there and she is on a great roll."
Charette has scored in each of the last three games with six goals during that span. Her recent surge has expedited her ascent up the SPU scoring charts.
Wednesday's trifecta increased her career total to 27 goals, the fifth-highest figure in school history. She surpassed the 25 goals amassed by
Meredith Teague (2005-08), the 2008 national player of the year.
Charette moved into a tie for the No 2 spot among all-time Falcons with 13 game-winning goals, matching the total of Shannon Lovejoy (2002-05). She rose to the No. 5 position with 79 total points.
Her career totals are even more impressive considering that they came in only three seasons. Those statistics don't include the 21 goals and nine assists that Charette compiled as a freshman at Tampa, the year before she transferred to SPU.
While Charette shines on the offensive end, junior goalkeeper
Maddie Dickinson continues to dull opposing attacks.
The nation's leading goalkeeper, Dickinson made two saves en route to her eighth shutout and the Falcons' 14th overall. SPU has outscored opponents by a combined 39-3 margin.
Dickinson has not allowed a goal while playing 810 minutes this season. Dating back to last season, she has a current school-record scoreless streak of 953-minutes, 7-seconds.
The Falcons (14-1) improved to 7-1 in conference play to take over the first-place position from Western Washington (6-1-1) and set-up a one-two showdown next Wednesday in Seattle. Reigning NCAA Division II national champion SPU and the defending GNAC titlist Vikings square off on Oct. 28 in a 7 p.m. game at Interbay Stadium.
WWU is the only team to register a win during the last two seasons against the Falcons, who have a combined 36-0-2 record against everybody else. The Vikings beat SPU 3-2 on Oct. 3 in Bellingham, where they were 1-0 victors last season.
Charette's first goal Wednesday, at 32:16, gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead they carried into halftime. She was the beneficiary of some brilliant, brisk passing from teammates
Janae Godoy (Yakima, Wash./West Valley HS) and
Brandi Hamre (Bremerton, Wash./Central Kitsap HS).
Godoy controlled the ball 20 yards from the top of the box before passing to Hamre, who was streaking down left flank. Hamre quickly drove toward the end line and slipped a short pass to Charette who buried a 12-yard shot into upper right corner.
The Falcons took that 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Charette scored two more times less than six minutes apart. Godoy distributed her second assist, sending a pass into the right side of the box that found Charette alone in front of the goal. With only the goalkeeper to beat, Charette delivered a low, nine-yard strike into the left side of the goal at 58:04.
She completed the hat trick at 63:39 on a 10-yard header off a looping 35-yard free kick by sophomore
Kelsey Jenkins (Kent, Wash./Kentwood HS).
Hamre capped the scoring at 72:07. A scramble in the penalty area drew MSUB goalkeeper Jordan Fenwick to the top of the box. Hamre gathered the ball just outside the box and lofted a 20-yard shot into the unoccupied goal for her second score of the season.
“I love how we played in the second half,” Sekyra said. “We are really starting to click offensively while we continue to limit team's chances defensively.”
After having a one-shot deficit before halftime, SPU posted a 12-3 second-half shooting advantage.
Fenwick was credited with four saves for the Yellowjackets, who were outshot 17-9 for the game.
The Falcons travel to Carson, Calif. for their final non-conference game. They play at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at 7 p.m.
“I'm excited. It's a big game down there,” Sekyra said. “It's a great game to play before the NCAA Tournament because I think it's going to have an NCAA Tournament vibe to it.”
Following that non-league affair, SPU returns home for Wednesday's conference clash with Western Washington.
