SEATTLE -- Brandon Larrieu had 19 points, and Rafael Moreira added 14, including a three-point play with 1:18 left in the game, as 18th-ranked Seattle Pacific fought off Carroll College for an 86-73 nonconference men's basketball victory on Friday in the SPU Tournament at Brougham Pavilion.

Rob Diederichs added 12 for the undefeated Falcons (5-0), and Jeff Downs had 10. Downs drained a 3-pointer with the shot clock running down to boost SPU's lead to 77-71 at the two-minute mark, starting the Falcons on a game-clinching 6-0 scoring run.

Falcons head coach Ryan Looney recorded his 100th coaching victory. He has a career record of 100-55, with the first 95 of those victories coming during his five-year tenure at Eastern Oregon University before he took over the SPU helm this season. He is the first SPU coach ever to win his first five games.

Carroll (6-3) was led by the 19 points of Andy Garland, who made it a double-double with 10 rebounds. Chase Godecke added 13 for the Fighting Saints, who shot 65.2 percent during the first half (15 of 23), but cooled down to 45.5 percent during the second half (15 of 33) and wound up at 53.6 percent for the game.

"It definitely wasn't one of our best efforts," said Larrieu who added five assists to his team-high 19 points. "We defended pretty well in the first half. In the second half we kind of got away from our defense and they got some easy buckets on us."

Coach Looney agreed with his starting senior wing.

"I feel lucky to be going home with a win. They're really hard to play," he said of the Brandon Veltri-coached Carroll team. Brandon is the identical twin brother of Saints assistant Brock Veltri, who served on the SPU staff the previous five seasons.

"Carroll was really disciplined on offense and we were not the first 20 minutes of the game. We thought if we could defend them in the second half the same way we did in the first and do a better job on the offensive end we would probably be okay. If you look at the stats, that's exactly what happened. We settled down, our shot selection was a little bit better and as a result we shot 77 percent in the second half."

Seattle Pacific hit a blistering 66 percent from the field (31 of 47), and missed just five shots during a 77.3 percent-shooting second half (17 of 22).

After senior point guard Colby Vranes (Taylorsville, Utah) drained a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Falcons a 37-34 lead at the intermission, SPU hit its first seven shots of the second half to build a 57-49 lead. Carroll made several runs to get close, but the Falcons responded each time, including their decisive 6-0 surge to make it 80-71.

Seattle Pacific takes on national No. 1 BYU-Hawaii on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Seasiders beat Central Washington in the tournament opener on Friday, 94-90. Central faces Carroll on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Brougham.
