SEATTLE – Shedrick Nelson scored 11 of his 13 points during the decisive second-half surge Saturday that carried the Western Washington men to a 98-82 victory over Cal State East Bay on the last day of the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic.
The Vikings (2-1) drew a split of their tournament games at Seattle Pacific's Brougham Pavilion. They lost 86-80 against Dixie State on Friday.
Western scored the first seven points of the game and led by as many as 15 in the first half at 47-32 with 2:14 remaining. East Bay netted the next six points to close within 47-38 at halftime.
Will Friedman scored eight of his team's first 10 points to start the second half, helping the Pioneers (1-2) draw within 49-48 with 17:18 left to play. CSU East Bay tied the game 55-55 on a Roshun Wynne 3-pointer with 15:28 remaining.
Nelson answered 16 seconds later with a trey, igniting a 15-2 WWU run. He fueled the surge with 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.
Michael Duty capped the run with a layup at 11:23 that put the Vikings in control at 70-57.
Duty had a team-high 22 points. His 9-of-10 accuracy from the floor helped Western shoot at a 65-percent clip as a team (32 of 49). The Vikings made 12 of 18 shots from 3-point range, led by 4-of-5 from Derek Dickerson and 3-of-4 from Nelson.
Dickerson finished with 14 points Zach Henifin added 12 for WWU while Rory Blanche and Chris Mitchell each had 11.
Mark Samuels scored 26 points to lead the Pioneers, who also got 24 from Freedman and 16 from Wynne.
East Bay lost both of its Sodexo Classic games, including a 102-62 defeat against host SPU on Friday.
