SPOKANE -- A trio of Seattle Pacific athletes won their individual battles. And the Falcons as a whole helped Team Washington win the War.
Chad Meis, Justin Felt and Amanda Alvarez of SPU came up with individual victories on Saturday as an eight-school state of Washington combination beat a contingent representing Oregon, Idaho and Montana in the War III track and field meet at Spokane Falls Community College.
Led by Washington State's total of 148 points, Team Washington won the women's meet, 404.83-336.17. Seattle Pacific contributed 71.16 points to the Team Washington total, and finished fourth among the 15 schools that sent women's teams.
Team Washington's men prevailed, 451.17-286.83. The Falcons chipped in 38 points to the Washington men's total, and were eighth among the 16 teams on that side overall. Idaho had the top score of 125.
SPU senior Meis (Renton, Wash./Seattle Christian HS) won the men's steeplechase in 9 minutes, 28.67 seconds. But he wasn't the only Falcon contributing to Washington's cause in that event. Freshman AJ Baker (AuGres, Mich.) ran sixth in 9:49.72 -- a personal-best by nearly 13 seconds from the previous PR that he posted just last Saturday (April 3) when he won the steeple at the JD Shotwell Invitational in Tacoma.
Falcon senior Felt (Eugene, Ore.) took the men's long jump at 21 feet, 11¾ inches. That's the second week in a row and the third time this spring he has won the long jump. Felt's previous two victories came at the UPS Outdoor Preview on March 6 and at the Shotwell Invite.
Seattle Pacific freshman Alvarez (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS) went 38-0 to take the triple jump. It was her fourth victory in that event in five meets this season.
Junior Crystal Sims (Portland, Ore.) factored into the Team Washington women's scoring in all three of her events. In her first try of the year in the 400 meters, Sims ran sixth in 58.36 -- fast enough to put her into the automatic qualifying list for next month's Great Northwest Athletic Conference meet. In that same race, freshman Emily Quatier (Portland, Ore.) moved from the provisional onto the automatic list for GNACs by logging a 58.53 for seventh place.
Sims also was sixth in the 100 hurdles (15.96) and seventh in the 200 (25.73). The latter was a personal best.
SPU grabbed three of the eight points-scoring spots in the 400 hurdles, led by the second-place performance of junior Jennifer Pike (Vancouver, Wash./Skyview HS) with a 1:05.12. Sophomore Natalie Nobbs (Yakima, Wash./Riverside Christian) was fourth (1:06.36) and freshman Kira Lewis (Yakima, Wash./West Valley HS) was seventh (1:08.38).
Sophomore Natty Plunkett (Bellevue, Wash./Newport HS) and senior Kate Harline (Orem, Utah) contributed distance points. Plunkett was second in the 5,000 meters (17:30.09), and Harline took third in the 1,500 (4:45.15).
Sophomore Brittany Aanstad (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) also was into the points twice for the Washington team, tying for fourth in the high jump (5-2¼) and taking sixth in the javelin (138-9). Junior Jacquie Mattson (Odell, Ore.) added high points by tying for eighth at 4-11.
In addition to her triple jump victory Amanda Alvarez was sixth in the long jump. Falcon freshman teammate Trinna Miranda (Tigard, Ore.) took fifth in that event at 18-0½, an improvement of 10¼ inches from her previous season and career best. And in the triple jump, freshman Kelly Jenkins (Hillsboro, Ore.) improved by a whole foot to 35-2½ to place ninth. Athena Alvarez (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS) was SPU's other scorer in the triple, taking seventh.
Junior Melissa Peaslee (Fox Island, Wash./Gig Harbor HS) added third-place points in the pole vault, clearing a season-best 11-11¾.
Falcon freshman Nate Seely (Lynden, Wash./Lynden HS) chipped in some points for the Team Washington men by placing third in the 800 meters with a 1:54.61. Freshman Ryan Endresen (Portland, Ore.) added fifth-place points in the 400 hurdles (55.71).
The Falcons picked up fourth-place points in the 4x100 relay. Junior Hilario Ramirez (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue HS), Felt, senior Micah Grounds (San Diego, Calif.) and Endresen ran a 43.98.
Junior Jace Derwin (Snoqualime, Wash./Mount Si HS) came within four inches of getting into the points in the javelin. But that didn't take away from his career-best throw of 177 feet, 3 inches. That was nearly nine feet farther than his mark of 168-4 from last Saturday's JD Shotwell Invite. Also taking a big jump in the throws was freshman Billy Martin (Edmonds, Wash./King's HS), who improved by nearly six feet in the hammer to a career-best 131-5.
Sophomore distance man Daniel Friesen continued his comeback from an injury that kept him on the sidelines for all of cross country and almost all of the indoor track season. Friesen cut more than five seconds off his time in the 1,500 meters, logging a 4:04.51 that put him onto the GNAC provisional qualifying list.
The Falcons will be in California on Thursday and Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays.
