SPU-Cal State Stanislaus box score play-by-play
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – A day of double-doubles for
Sarah Risser and
Lindsey Wodrich, and a career-type day for
Shelby Swanson gave the Seattle Pacific Falcons a double-dose of victories to open their 2010 volleyball season.
Senior outside hitter Risser and junior outside hitter Wodrich had kill-dig double-double in both matches, and sophomore setter Swanson shattered her career high for assists in the first match as the Falcons downed San Francisco State and Cal State Stanislaus in the Seawolf Spike at Sonoma State University.
SPU came from behind to beat San Francisco State, 25-23,23-25, 12-25, 25-23, 15-10, then turned aside Cal State Stanislaus later in the afternoon, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 26-24.
That gave the Falcons their first 2-0 start since the 2005 season.
“It was a barnburner against San Francisco State, that's for sure. That was just a grind,” SPU coach
Chris Johnson said. “We played great in the first game against Stanislaus, but our passing let us down in the second game. Then we hit .405 in the third game and were behind in Game 4, but we pulled it out.”
SPU faces Chico State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., then closes the tournament at 7 against host Sonoma State.
Risser (Santa Barbara, Calif) had a team-leading 19 kills against San Francisco State, and came up with 12 digs. She put down 12 kills and had 16 digs against Stanislaus
Wodrich (Richland, Wash./Richland HS) led the way in both kills (15) and digs) against Stanislaus. She started her season with 16 kills and 18 digs against the Gators.
Swanson (Kennewick, Wash./Kamiakin HS) racked up 52 assists in the San Francisco State match. That easily eclipsed her previous career high of 28 which she set last year. She made it a double-double in that match with 10 digs. Swanson came up with another 38 assists in the second match of the day.
Junior libero
Anna Herold (Bothell, Wash./Shorecrest HS), taking aim at the Seattle Pacific career record for digs, had 60 on Friday – 32 against San Francisco State, 28 more against Cal State Stanislaus. That gives her 1,253. The record of 1,552 was set from 2005-08 by Torii Mount.
Sophomore middle blocker
Angie Pricco (Briar, Wash./Blanchet HS) had 11 blocks for the day. Freshman
Nikki Lowell (Claremont, Calif.) hit .429 in the first match (17kills and just two errors on 35 total attacks) and had four blocks in the second match.
Down 2-1 in games to San Francisco State, Seattle Pacific fell into a 5-0 hole at the outset of Game 4, climbed back in, then was down 23-22 when Wodrich and
Angie Pricco combined for a block to make it 23-23. Back-to-back errors by San Francisco State gave SPU the two points it needed to force the fifth game.
With Swanson serving, the Falcons raced to a 5-0 lead in Game 5. Seattle Pacific eventually stretched it out to 10-3 and 12-4. The Gators staved off one match point at 14-9, but Swanson then set up Risser for the clincher.
Johnson said a defensive change helped SPU take early charge of the deciding game.
“We made big adjustments against their outside hitter (Lauren Walsh), who was just killing us all day,” Johnson said. “Paige (Hoffman) got two big blocks against her – and they pulled her out. That made a huge difference. It really felt like, 'OK, this is ours now.'”
The Falcons were one point away from being forced into a fifth game by Stanislaus. But a Wodrich kill, a Wodrich service ace, and a Warriors attack errors put the final three points of the match on SPU's side of the board.
