FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Even when the Seattle Pacific Falcons get knocked down, they don't stay down very long.
Cailin Fellows and
Shelby Swanson both registered double-doubles on Saturday, helping 15
th-ranked SPU bounce back to sweep Alaska Fairbanks in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match.
Scores in The Patty Center were 25-19, 25-22, 25-15.
The last three victories for Seattle Pacific have been in three-game sweeps.
SPU (10-4, 5-1 GNAC) shook off Thursday night's four-game loss at Alaska Anchorage by leading Saturday's contest against Fairbanks (2-13, 2-5 GNAC) most of the way. The Falcons have won 14 straight games spanning their last five matches against the Nanooks dating back to 2009.
“It was a combination of things. But more than anything, we had a better mentality today than we had on Thursday,” SPU coach
Chris Johnson said of getting back on track. “We just did a better job today of getting better with each game as far as focus and ball control.”
Junior outside hitter Fellows (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway HS) had 15 kills and 11 digs for the second double-double of her career.
Junior setter Swanson (Kennewick, Wash./Kamiakin HS) had 36 assists and 11 digs. That's her second double-double in the last three matches and the 12th of her career. Swanson began the week ranked No. 10 nationally in average assists per game at 11.19.
Senior outside hitter
Paige Hoffman (Encinitas, Calif.) delivered another solid hitting performance with eight kills and just two errors on 20 attacks for an even .300 percentage.
Angie Pricco hit .364 for the day with five kills
“It's good to see Cailin playing all the way around,” Johnson said. “She was doing a good job in the back row and being a big threat up front. Paige was real consistent again and played a great match. They didn't have an answer for her. Angie had a real good match today and had a solid weekend.”
Up 16-15 in Game 1, Seattle Pacific went on a 4-1 surge to take a four-point lead, never allowing Alaska Fairbanks to get closer than three the rest of the way. Sophomore middle blocker
Nikki Lowell (Claremont, Calif.), who had six kills for the day, finished it off on a quick set from Swanson.
The Falcons were down 6-1 early in Game 2 before closing to 9-7. From there, they scored the next eight points -- six of them with junior middle blocker
Angie Pricco (Brier, Wash./Blanchet HS) serving – for a 15-9 lead.
The Nanooks did get within one at 23-22 before a service error gave SPU game point, which senior outside hitter
Lindsey Wodrich (Richland, Wash./Richland HS) converted with a service ace.
A seven-point run early in Game 3 took Seattle Pacific from 5-4 down to 11-5 up, and the lead never melted below five points the rest of the day.
Senior libero
Anna Herold (Bothell, Wash./Shorecrest HS) came up with 22 digs and now has 1,970 for her career.
The Falcons hit an even .200 for the match and limited Alaska Fairbanks to just .076. That's the fourth time this season SPU has kept an opponent below .100, and the 10
th time it has kept one below .200.
Seattle Pacific now begins a friendly October home stretch with of its next 10 matches in Royal Brougham Pavilion starting Thursday night when Simon Fraser visits at 7 p.m.
“We were on the road a lot in October (in previous seasons), so we're looking forward to having a lot of home matches,” Johnson said.
