SEATTLE – Seems that one five-game volleyball victory in three days wasn't enough for the Seattle Pacific Falcons.
On Monday night, they made it two.
Lindsey Wodrich had 17 kills and 11 digs for her eighth double-double of the year, and
Angie Pricco slammed a career-high 10 kills, leading 19th-ranked SPU past four-time defending Canadian champion British Columbia in a non-conference match.
Scores in Brougham Pavilion were 31-29, 17-25, 25-21, 29-31, 15-12.
“Apparently, we want to play longer,” said a smiling junior middle blocker Pricco (Brier, Wash./Blanchet HS), who beat her previous career high of nine kills. “We came out just as inspired as we always are even though it was a nonconference match, because they're a huge team up in Canada. Chris (Falcons head coach Johnson) just told us to be aggressive, swing away, and play our game.”
Swing away they did, as four players finished in double-figure kills for the Falcons (13-4 overall). In addition to Wodrich's 17 and Pricco's 10, sophomore middle blocker
Nikki Lowell (Claremont, Calif.) hammered 13 kills, and senior outside hitter
Paige Hoffman (Encinitas, Calif.) had 10.
Wodrich (Richland, Wash./Richland HS) now has 27 career double-doubles. With her 17 kills, one solo block and one service ace for a total of 19 points on Monday, she broke the 1,000-point mark for her career. Wodrich now has 1,001.
Freshman outside hitter
Jessica Miller (Fife, Wash./Fife HS) put down a career-high eight kills, and junior setter
Shelby Swanson (Kennewick, Wash./Kamiakin HS) racked up 54 assists.
Just 48 hours earlier, the Falcons downed Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival Western Washington in five games in Brougham. SPU now has won three five-gamers this season and six straight dating back to the start of the 2010 schedule.
“If we have to go five, I hope it's a habit to win it,” Johnson said. “I'm really impressed with the way the team stayed composed in these long matches, especially tonight with some personnel changes after two games. They did a good job of continuing to play as a team and communicate and stay together.”
SPU hadn't gone to 30 points in a game since Aug. 29, 2009, in a four-game loss to Ashland (Ohio) at the Southern California Classic. But it happened twice on Monday: in the opener when UBC fought off six game points before the Falcons finished it on the seventh try, then in Game 4 when the Thunderbirds survived four Seattle Pacific tries at match point to pull it out and force a deciding fifth game.
The Falcons built a 7-5 lead in Game 5 before British Columbia ran off three straight points for an 8-7 edge at the switchover. It was still the Thunderbirds on top at 11-10 when Seattle Pacific put together four straight points for a 14-11 advantage, the last of those coming on a kill by Wodrich to set up triple-match point.
UBC got one back for 14-12. Then Hoffman, whose next attack was dug up by a Thunderbirds defender, came right back with another one, sending it off at British Columbia block to clinch the match.
“We just told our girls to play aggressively,” Johnson said. “Keep swinging high and hard, focus on ball control and discipline, and be aggressive on offense.”
UBC (0-1) was playing its first match of the year. The Canadian season begins in late October and goes to March.
Seattle Pacific, in the midst of an eight-match October home stretch, returns to Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday in Brougham against Northwest Nazarene at 7 p.m.
