SEATTLE – From now on, they're playing for keeps.

C.J. Wilcox led four double-figure scorers with 19 points Friday, leading NCAA Division I Washington to a 77-60 win over Seattle Pacific in a men's basketball exhibition at Edmundson Pavilion.

The Falcons, ranked 22nd in the NCAA Division II preseason poll, drew a split of their two tune-up games against Pac-12 opponents. They upset 16th-ranked Arizona 69-68 on Oct. 27 in Tucson.

The high-level preseason games were beneficial according to junior Andy Poling (Portland, Ore.), who led SPU with 12 points and seven rebounds.

“With exhibitions you always try to learn and prepare for the games that really count. These games are a ton of fun. They're good experience for guys too.

“It's good to be out there playing against a real team in a real game situation, especially against big-time competition. It's just a great experience all around.”

UW scored the game's opening eight points and never trailed, extending its margin to as many as 19 points.

SPU scored the final three points of the period to draw within 33-26 at halftime.

The Huskies opened the second half with a 13-2 run, including points from six different players. That surge resulted in a 46-28 advantage with 15:43 left to play.

A layup by Poling and free throw by Riley Carel trimmed the deficit to 62-52 with 5:46 remaining. But that was as close as SPU would come as the Huskies responded with a 7-2 run to put the game out of reach.

Jobi Wall shared SPU's scoring leadership with 12 points and Jake Anderson added eight.

SPU shot 26 percent (8 of 31) in the first half, but improved to 44 percent (14 of 32) in the second to finish at 35 percent for the game (22 of 63).

“If there is a silver lining in the game, offensively we found a way to execute against that type of pressure in the second half,” said SPU coach Ryan Looney.

Much of the Falcons offensive struggles can be attributed to the swarming UW defense that forced 15 turnovers and blocked 10 shots.

The Huskies offense produced 47-percent accuracy on 28-of-63 shooting from the floor. Wilcox hit 7 of 16 shots, including 5 of 12 from 3-point range.

UW got a number of easy baskets on the fast break, outscoring SPU 19-0 in that category.

“There were a few areas where we need to do a much better job. One being the free throw line. We can't miss 13 free throws in a game like this and expect to have a chance,” said Looney, whose team made just 10 of 23 shots from the charity stripe.

“Also our defensive transition needs to improve. We gave up way too many easy baskets in that area.”

Abdul Gaddy and Terrence Ross each had 15 points for UW, which also got 10 from Tony Wroten.

“We couldn't play a better team in an exhibition game than Seattle Pacific. They really tested us with things that we have been working on,” said Husky coach Lorenzo Romar. “Defensively, we were really tested tonight. Sometimes we did a really good job, sometimes we didn't.

“That's what these games are for, to show you where your strengths and weaknesses are. Seattle Pacific did a great job of showing us.”

Looney said his team also profited from the exhibition contests.

“There's no better way for us to prepare for our season than two games in the Pac-12.”

The Falcons return to their usual Division II opponents next week. They start the regular season on Friday in St. George, Utah against the Dixie State team that eliminated them in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Tip-off is 6:30 p.m. Pacific Time for the first of two games for SPU at the Dixie State Classic.
