HONOLULU –
David Downs scored all 12 of his points on 3-pointers during the decisive second-half stretch, leading the Seattle Pacific men to a 61-57 victory over Chaminade in a non-conference basketball game at McCabe Gym.
The Falcons (7-2) seemed in control when
Jobi Wall hit a 3-pointer 18 seconds into the second half for a 31-21 advantage.
But Chaminade (3-4) rallied with an 18-5 run, fueled by six points from Lee Bailey, to surge ahead 39-36 with 14:08 left to play. Downs helped limit the damage with a 3-pointer at 15:21 that was his first basket. The sophomore point guard had missed his first seven shots, including four 3-point tries.
Downs proceeded to hit his next three treys, two of them during a 12-1 run that put SPU ahead for good at 51-42 with 16:14 remaining.
The Silverswords offered one final challenge, converting six straight free throws. Matt Cousins made the final four charity shots to draw his team within 59-57 with 1:23 on the clock.
Chaminade missed its final three shots and Falcons junior
Scott Morse clinched the win with two free throws at 0:12.
Andy Poling posted his third double-double with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds for SPU.
Reserve Rickey Clayborn was the lone double-figure scorer for the Silverswords with 11 points.
The Falcons shots 39 percent (22 of 56), but limited Chaminade to just 32-percent from the floor (18 of 56). The Silverswords had the upper-hand from the line, outscoring SPU 18-9 on free throws.
The difference proved to be long-range shooting as SPU owned a 24-9 scoring margin beyond the arc. Downs helped the Falcons make 8 of 24 treys while Chaminade shot just 3 for 16.
After trailing for the opening seven minutes, the Silverswords tied the game 9-9 on a 3-pointer by Darko Vukasovic with 12:20 left in the first half.
The Falcons answered by scoring the next nine points, including a pair of 3-pointers from
Jeff Dorman. The surge put SPU in front 18-9.
Dorman notched his season-high point total by halftime, helping the Falcons claim a 28-21 advantage with nine points on a trio of 3-pointers.
