ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Seattle Pacific Falcons had some comeback in them. But not enough to overcome three very fast starts by the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Thursday night.
Jackie Matthisen put down 17 kills, offsetting another double-double by Seattle Pacific's
Lindsey Wodrich, as UAA knocked off the 15
th-ranked Falcons in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match, 3-1.
Scores in the Wells Fargo Center were 26-24, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20.
The Falcons (9-4, 4-1 GNAC), who were the last unbeaten team in the GNAC heading into Thursday's round of matches, came up short in Anchorage for the fourth straight year.
“I don't think there's anything in particular (about playing at UAA),” Seattle Pacific coach
Chris Johnson said. “More than anything, they're just a good team.”
Seattle Pacific plays at Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday at 4 p.m. PDT.
Junior setter
Shelby Swanson (Kennewick, Wash./Kamiakin HS) had 37 assists to move past 2,000 for her career. She now has 2,004, making her the 21
st player in GNAC history to pass the 2,000 mark. She comes into the week ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II for assists at 11.19 per game.
Senior outside hitter Wodrich (Richland, Wash./Richland HS) had 15 kills and 12 digs for SPU. That was Wodrich's sixth double-double this season and the 25
th of her career. She has logged double-figure kills in each of Seattle Pacific's five conference matches.
Junior outside hitter
Cailin Fellows (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway HS) led the way with 16 kills and hit at a .209 clip. She also set a career high with five block assists. Junior middle blocker
Angie Pricco (Brier, Wash./Blanchet HS) set a career high with eight block assists.
Anchorage (9-5, 5-1 GNAC) took big leads in each of the three games it won.
“It wasn't anything really technical or tactical or physical,” Johnson said of falling into the early holes. “It was just us not playing well.”
The Seawolves went up 10-3 in Game 1. Seattle Pacific fought back and eventually climbed into a 24-24 tie before UAA got the final two points – one on a tip, the clincher on a kill.
The Falcons went on a 6-0 surge of their own to take a 7-3 lead in the second game, then saw it melt away into a 15-15 tie before going back in front to stay and gaining the split heading into the intermission.
An early 3-1 SPU lead in Game 3 quickly vanished as the Seawolves ran off 12 straight points – including four kills, two tips, and a service ace, all with Quincy Haught serving.
Anchorage raced to a 6-0 lead in the fourth game. This time, as in Game 1, the Falcons came back, getting within 7-5 and later cutting it to two once again at 19-17, but eventually came no closer.
But as SPU showed, comebacks were not out of the question.
“We knew we had the ability to run off some points like that, and we knew they had a propensity to give up some points,” Johnson said. “We said, 'Come on, we can get these guys and get after them.' But they put up a great fight and got to a lot of balls.”
The Seawolves, with four players who are 5-11 and one who is 5-10, got 13 points off of blocks on Thursday, including three solos by 5-11 sophomore middle blocker Robyn Burton. She also had 14 kills, and hit .344. (She came in as the GNAC's leading hitter at .405.)
Seattle Pacific limited the Seawolves to just .199 hitting. That's the ninth time this season the Falcons have kept an opponent below .200, but the first time it hasn't been quite enough to get the win, as Anchorage wound up with 10 more kills (56-46) and five fewer errors (24-29). But SPU, the top-hitting team in the GNAC at .226 coming into Thursday, hit just .108.
